NC Dinos manager Lee Ho-jun, a former KBO legend himself, has expressed profound admiration for KIA Tigers slugger Kim Do-young’s exceptional hitting prowess, particularly his remarkable home run ability. Despite a game being postponed due to rain, Lee couldn’t help but praise Kim’s performance from the previous day, highlighting a specific home run that left him in awe.
Kim Do-young’s Explosive Home Run Season
Kim Do-young is currently on pace to hit over 50 home runs this season, a remarkable feat considering he played in only 30 games last year due to a hamstring injury. While he spent the early part of this season working to regain his full hitting touch, his home run production has surpassed even his MVP-caliber 2024 season. His current pace suggests he could finish with 47-48 home runs, demonstrating incredible consistency and power.
What makes Kim Do-young’s home runs so impressive, according to Lee, is the nature of his hits. They aren’t just towering fly balls that barely clear the fence. Instead, Kim generates immense bat speed, driving the ball with such force and trajectory that there’s rarely any doubt about whether it will be a home run once it’s well-struck. This consistent, powerful contact is a hallmark of his hitting.
A Legend’s Perspective on Hitting Prowess
Lee Ho-jun, who began his professional career with the Haitai Tigers (KIA’s predecessor) in 1994 and retired after the 2017 season with the NC Dinos, amassing a total of 337 KBO home runs, possesses a deep understanding of the game’s mechanics. Even with his extensive experience and legendary status, Lee finds Kim Do-young’s talent to be extraordinary.
Lee recalled a specific instance during a recent game against the NC Dinos where Kim hit a solo home run to left field with no runners on base in the first inning. The hit came on a slider from NC’s starting pitcher, Tod, that was well-located in the zone. Although KIA ultimately lost the game 10-4, with their own starter Yang Hyeon-jong giving up 8 runs in just 1 and 1/3 innings, Kim’s solo blast was a significant offensive highlight.
“He could hit over 40 home runs. His wrist strength is truly amazing,” Lee commented. “Even on a pitch that should have been hit the other way due to the timing, he used his wrist power to drive it straight through. Ultimately, players who hit for distance have excellent wrists. When I was coaching in Japan, I was asked what the most important part of a hitter’s body is, and I said ‘wrists.’ They agreed, saying that even if the rest of your body’s momentum is gone, if your wrists remain, you can still hit a home run by snapping them.” Lee emphasized that players with strong wrists undeniably possess significant power.
Major League Interest Grows
Kim Do-young’s exceptional talent has not gone unnoticed by Major League Baseball organizations. Despite still having room to grow to meet potential MLB posting requirements, scouts have been actively gathering data on him since he captured the KBO MVP award in 2024 by achieving the rare 30 home run-30 stolen base milestone.
This season, MLB scouts have been frequent visitors to ballparks to observe Kim Do-young in action. His performance has been so compelling that he was ranked as the top international prospect and fifth overall in a list published by the Major League Baseball statistics site ‘FanGraphs’ in March. This high ranking indicates significant anticipation for his potential transition to the highest level of baseball.
Overcoming Adversity and Future Prospects
Kim Do-young faced a critical juncture last year when a hamstring injury threatened to derail his career at its peak. However, he has made a remarkable comeback, shedding the effects of the injury within a year and reasserting his dominance in the league. He is now poised to be a key player for the South Korean national team in their quest for a fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Already recognized as one of the league’s premier hitters, Kim Do-young continues to impress with his consistent ability to produce spectacular hits, showcasing a trajectory of continuous growth. His blend of power, speed, and resilience makes him a compelling figure in the KBO and a player with significant international appeal.
His impressive performance and the attention from MLB scouts underscore his status as a top-tier talent, capable of captivating audiences and achieving new heights in his career.
