The gap between these chasing teams and the fifth-place team, the Doosan Bears, has widened considerably. The distance between the sixth-place teams and the Bears is a substantial nine games. The fourth-place KIA Tigers are also pulling away, now 11 games ahead of the sixth-place pack. At this point, the term ‘insurmountable’ might not be an exaggeration for their playoff aspirations.

Historically, late-season surges and unexpected winning streaks have defined dramatic playoff races. The 2019 season serves as a prime example, where the Doosan Bears, trailing by nine games on August 15th, staged a remarkable comeback to win the regular season pennant and subsequently the Korean Series. Such ‘miracles’ are rare, but they are precisely what teams like Lotte, Hanwha, and NC will need to make up the current deficit.
The remaining schedule presents a complex puzzle. With the top two teams largely assured of their positions, the focus shifts to the battles further down the league. For the teams in the thick of the playoff hunt, every head-to-head matchup against direct rivals becomes paramount. These are the games where the margin for error is smallest, and securing victories is essential to closing the gap.
Asian Games Impact on the Standings
A significant factor that could shake up the playoff race is the upcoming Asian Games.
