The Korea Professional Football League (K League) has announced measures to combat the ongoing severe heatwave, including delaying match start times. Effective from July 7th, all K League 1 and K League 2 matches will commence at 8:00 PM instead of the previous 7:30 PM. This decision aims to prioritize the safety of players, fans, and stadium staff during the extreme weather conditions.
K League Responds to Unprecedented Heatwave
South Korea is currently experiencing a prolonged and intense heatwave, with temperatures in some regions exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The extreme heat has prompted concerns across various sectors, and professional football is no exception. The K League, in an effort to mitigate the risks associated with playing in such high temperatures, has decided to postpone the kickoff times for its upcoming fixtures.
The official announcement from the K League on July 5th confirmed that all 5 matches of K League 1’s 22nd round and all 8 matches of K League 2’s 21st round, originally scheduled for 7:30 PM, will now begin at 8:00 PM. This adjustment will be implemented starting with the 6 K League 2 matches scheduled for July 7th, followed by 5 K League 1 matches and 2 K League 2 matches on July 8th.
Concerns for Player and Fan Safety
The decision comes amid growing anxieties from individuals within the league. Officials have expressed deep concern over the potential for heat-related illnesses, not only among the athletes but also among spectators and operational staff. One official from a Seoul-based K League 1 club stated, “We are worried that someone might collapse. This isn’t just about the players on the field; we’ve seen fans faint in the stands, and the safety of ball boys and other operational staff is also a serious concern. Some K League 2 stadiums reportedly have inadequate cooling systems, making the situation extremely critical.”
The intense heat poses significant challenges to the physical well-being of everyone involved in match day operations. While measures like “cooling breaks” during halves and “water spraying” during halftime have been implemented, they are proving insufficient to combat the severity of the current weather.
Exploring Long-Term Solutions
Beyond the immediate adjustment of kickoff times, discussions are underway regarding more comprehensive solutions. Some within the league suggest shifting the season schedule to avoid the peak summer heat altogether. One official from a provincial club noted, “Among the players, there’s even a sentiment that they would prefer more matches in February and November, rather than during this intense heat.” This sentiment points towards a desire for a schedule similar to that of baseball, which features a “winter break.”
However, implementing such drastic changes faces considerable hurdles. A representative from the K League stated, “Switching to a winter break would necessitate a significant increase in mid-season matches, potentially leading to player fatigue and injuries. Furthermore, the current methods for maintaining the pitch during freezing temperatures are not yet fully established.” The league is reportedly exploring various options from multiple perspectives but emphasizes the need for patience as they deliberate on the best course of action.
Pitch Condition Challenges
The extreme weather is also taking a toll on the playing surfaces. Recent heavy rainfall followed by the intense heat has led to issues with the pitch conditions in some areas, causing turf to become waterlogged. “The pitch condition is just the tip of the iceberg,” lamented one official. “Turf problems are bound to recur under these weather conditions.” This adds another layer of complexity to managing the league during this challenging period.
