Former Major League Baseball player Jerad Eickhoff experienced a frightening on-field incident during a recent game, prompting widespread concern among fans and colleagues. Eickhoff, who previously played for the Doosan Bears in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), collapsed on the field after a collision, leading to a temporary halt in play and immediate medical attention.
The Incident Unfolds
The event occurred on July 18th (Korean time) during a home game for the New York Mets against the Philadelphia Phillies. Eickhoff, batting fifth and playing first base, was running the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. While attempting to field a ground ball, he collided with oncoming pitcher Nick Pivetta. The impact struck Eickhoff on the side of his head, causing him to fall to the ground immediately.
Witnesses described a distressing scene as Eickhoff remained motionless on the field. The game was suspended as medical personnel rushed to his aid. Both teams’ players appeared visibly shaken by the incident, with Pivetta, the opposing pitcher, reportedly showing significant distress.
Teammate Francisco Lindor later recounted the moment, expressing his fear: “At that moment, it was really scary. It felt like he wasn’t with us anymore.”
Following the incident, Eickhoff was fitted with a neck brace and transported off the field in a cart. In a gesture that offered some relief to concerned onlookers, he managed to give a thumbs-up to the fans as he was being taken away, indicating he had regained some level of consciousness.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza addressed the situation after the game, describing the collision as a “terrifying moment on a baseball field.” He noted that Eickhoff took some time to regain his senses, stating, “It was a really tough collision.” Mendoza also shared that when Eickhoff did become aware, his first question was, “What happened?” This indicated a period of temporary memory loss following the impact.
Fortunately, subsequent medical examinations at the hospital revealed no severe injuries. Mendoza provided an update, stating, “The CT scan came back negative. In that sense, it’s a very positive result.” He added that while Eickhoff was experiencing concussion symptoms and significant headaches, his limbs were fully functional.
Speaking at a briefing before the next day’s game on the 19th, Mendoza offered further reassurance. “Jerad Eickhoff is in a hopeful condition right now. All the tests came back well. He’s currently experiencing short-term memory loss and a severe headache, but he still has his sense of humor,” he elaborated.
