Japan’s World Cup Preparations Marred by Captain’s Injury Concerns
Concerns are mounting for the Japanese national football team as captain Wataru Endo continues to be absent from training sessions, casting a shadow over their preparations for the upcoming 2026 North, Central America and Caribbean World Cup.
Endo’s Persistent Absence from Training
The Japanese squad is currently in camp in Monterey, Mexico, for their World Cup buildup. Reports indicate that Endo has missed training for three consecutive days since arriving in Monterey. While he made an appearance on the training field on Tuesday, he did not participate in the full session and instead returned indoors shortly after.
This continued absence follows an incident during Japan’s friendly match against Iceland on the 31st of last month, where Endo was substituted at halftime. He reportedly felt an issue with his leg, leading to his subsequent inability to join team training and sparking significant worry within the camp.
Impact on Squad Strategy and Potential Replacements
Endo’s fitness is a critical concern, as he is considered a key component of manager Hajime Moriyasu’s tactical plans for the tournament. His absence could significantly disrupt the team’s midfield strategy.
The selection of Endo over the previously excluded Hidemaasa Morita in the initial squad had already raised questions, with some speculating about his fitness levels. Manager Moriyasu had opted to bring his captain back into the fold, but this latest setback has amplified anxieties.
The situation has led to discussions about potential replacements, with veteran Yosuke Ideguchi participating in the training camp. However, Ideguchi himself has publicly addressed the speculation, stating in a recent interview, “I am not a replacement for Endo. That will not happen.”
Broader Team Concerns
While most of the Japanese squad, including star player Takefusa Kubo, are reportedly undergoing regular training, Endo’s situation stands out. The team faces the challenge of being ready for their opening World Cup group stage matches, which are fast approaching.
The uncertainty surrounding their captain’s condition adds another layer of difficulty to an already demanding preparation period as Japan aims to make a strong showing in the global tournament.
