E-Mart, a major South Korean retailer, has announced a special promotion for fall blue crabs, offering them at 689 won per 100 grams. This pricing strategy positions the retailer slightly below its competitor, Homeplus, which is offering the same item for 690 won per 100 grams during a concurrent promotional period. The sale commenced on October 21st and is scheduled to run for three days.
Aggressive Pricing Strategy for Blue Crabs
The current promotional price of 689 won per 100 grams for fall blue crabs is 52 won higher than the price offered during E-Mart’s similar promotion last year, which was 741 won per 100 grams. Following the initial three-day sale, from October 24th to 26th, E-Mart will further reduce the price. During this latter period, customers who are members of Shinsegye Point will be able to purchase the blue crabs at 772 won per 100 grams, representing a discount of over 60% from the regular price of 1,980 won per 100 grams.
Homeplus, in parallel, is also running a promotion on its ‘Naengsu Matcha Gijeol Crab’ from October 21st to 23rd, priced at 690 won per 100 grams. This creates a direct price competition between the two retailers, with only a 1-won difference in their offerings during the overlapping sale days.
Securing Supply for the Promotion
To ensure sufficient stock for this significant promotion, E-Mart has reportedly entered into exclusive contracts with over 50 selected fishing vessels operating in key West Coast fishing grounds, including Taean in Chungnam Province. The caught crabs are processed at a dedicated facility near the port before being delivered to E-Mart stores on the same day they are caught. The initial supply volume prepared for the first day of the sale is substantial, exceeding 20 tons, which is more than a 70% increase compared to the previous year’s stock.
Broader Seasonal Produce Discounts
Beyond the blue crab promotion, E-Mart is also offering discounts on other seasonal agricultural and livestock products. In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, E-Mart is participating in a ‘Farm and Livestock Product Discount Support’ program. This initiative runs from October 20th to 26th.
During this period, consumers can purchase Shine Muscat grapes (1.5kg) for 12,188 won and Campbell grapes (1.5kg) for 11,988 won. Other featured items include:
- Fresh Hwangbarae Pears (4-7 pieces per bag): 14,348 won
- Fresh Hobak Sweet Potatoes (1kg): 5,388 won
Additionally, a special limited-time offer is available for ‘Badapum Eon Sal’ (sea-harvested rice) from Goheung, South Jeolla Province. This 10kg bag of rice will be sold for 34,980 won from October 24th to 26th.
Commitment to Value
Jeong Woo-jin, a marketing manager at E-Mart, commented on the retailer’s efforts, stating, “We are continuously striving to ensure that customers can find seasonal produce at reasonable prices.” This sentiment underscores E-Mart’s commitment to providing value and accessibility for popular seasonal foods, particularly during the autumn harvest season.
The aggressive pricing and broad range of discounts on seasonal items reflect E-Mart’s strategy to attract customers and stimulate sales during a key retail period. By securing exclusive supply chains and leveraging government support programs, the company aims to offer competitive prices on high-demand products like fall blue crabs and fresh produce.
