South Korean fried chicken chain BHC has officially launched its first store in the Philippines, marking a significant step in its international expansion. The inaugural outlet is situated in SM North EDSA, a major shopping mall located in Quezon City, the heart of the capital city, Manila. This strategic location was chosen to enhance brand visibility and accessibility for local consumers.
Strategic Expansion into the Philippine Market
BHC’s entry into the Philippine market is part of a broader strategy to broaden its global presence and introduce its unique fried chicken experience to new audiences. The company aims to leverage its prime location within a high-traffic shopping destination to build brand recognition and foster customer engagement in the Philippines. The opening ceremony, held on the 29th of the previous month, was attended by Song Ho-seop, CEO of Dining Brands Group, the parent company of BHC, underscoring the importance of this venture.
Store Design and Operational Model
The new BHC store spans approximately 52 pyeong (roughly 172 square meters) and offers seating for 86 customers. Recognizing the typical shorter dwell times within shopping mall environments, the store has adopted a Limited-Service Restaurant (LSR) operational model. This approach is designed for efficiency, allowing for quick order taking and service, which is ideal for customers who may not have extended periods for a meal. The LSR model emphasizes immediate preparation and delivery of food upon ordering, ensuring a swift and satisfying dining experience.
Menu Innovation: Blending Korean Flavors with Local Tastes
BHC’s menu in the Philippines is a carefully curated blend of its signature Korean offerings and localized items designed to appeal to the Filipino palate. Core menu items include various preparations of fried chicken, alongside popular Korean flavors like BHC’s signature 뿌링클 (Bburinkle), 핫뿌링클 (Hot Bburinkle), 맛초킹 (Machoking), and 레드킹 (Red King). These are complemented by six types of sauces, chosen to pair well with the chicken.
Localized Offerings for Filipino Consumers
Understanding the diverse culinary landscape of Southeast Asia, BHC has introduced meal-type combo menus centered around stir-fried chicken, reflecting local dining customs. A notable addition is Filipino-style spaghetti, a dish that has garnered significant popularity among both locals and tourists. This marks the first time BHC has featured such a specific local adaptation on its menu.
Further catering to local preferences, the menu also includes three types of chicken burgers and a variety of side dishes. Notably, popular Korean street food items like Japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), and Rose Tteokbokki have been included. BHC states that these menu selections are intended to strengthen customer connection and provide a more immersive brand experience for the Philippine market.
Executive Insights on Market Strategy
Nam Hwa-yeon, Head of Overseas Business at Dining Brands Group, expressed optimism about the venture. “The Philippines is a market with a developed dining culture and a high consumption rate of chicken,” Nam stated. “We have strategically developed our menu lineup to reflect the local food culture and dining patterns.”
Nam further elaborated on the company’s vision: “Starting with our first branch in the Philippines, BHC plans to continuously expand our customer base by showcasing our uniquely differentiated taste and brand experience.” This approach highlights BHC’s commitment to adapting its global brand to resonate with local consumers while maintaining its core identity.
Future Outlook for BHC in the Philippines
The launch of the first BHC store in Manila is a foundational step for the brand’s ambitions in the region. By offering a menu that balances authentic Korean flavors with popular local dishes, BHC aims to capture a significant share of the competitive fried chicken market in the Philippines. The company’s focus on localized offerings, combined with its efficient service model, is expected to drive customer loyalty and facilitate further growth. BHC’s strategic expansion signals a growing trend of international food brands adapting their strategies to suit diverse consumer tastes and market dynamics in Southeast Asia.
