Former baseball coach Baek In-chun, widely recognized as the mentor who nurtured the career of national baseball icon Lee Seung-yeop, passed away at the age of 83 on November 15th. Lee Seung-yeop, currently the hitting coach for the Lotte Giants, expressed his profound grief and gratitude through social media, reflecting on the significant impact Baek had on his journey from a promising young player to a celebrated athlete.
A Mentor’s Vision for a Young Star
The deep connection between Lee Seung-yeop and Baek In-chun dates back to 1996 when Lee was just shy of 20 years old and playing for the Samsung Lions. Baek, then a coach, recognized Lee’s immense potential and boldly predicted that he would not only become one of Korea’s top players but also make his mark in Japanese professional baseball.
At the time, Lee Seung-yeop was focused on setting and achieving realistic, short-term goals. However, Baek In-chun possessed a broader vision. He encouraged Lee to dream bigger and aim for higher achievements, pushing him beyond immediate objectives. Lee recalled, “The coach was a truly important person who helped me dream bigger and look towards greater heights.”
The Turning Point: A Question About Ambition
A pivotal moment in Lee Seung-yeop’s career occurred when Baek In-chun directly asked him, “What kind of hitter do you want to become?” Without hesitation, Lee responded, “I want to become a home run hitter.” This declaration marked the beginning of a rigorous and transformative training regimen under Baek’s guidance.
The training was unlike anything Lee had experienced before. He described it as “completely different training methods, intense workouts, and the coach’s stern discipline whenever I showed any signs of slacking off.” He vividly remembers Baek’s strictness, which, though challenging, was instrumental in his development. “The innocent and lacking me grew stronger step by step under the coach’s teachings, and that’s how I was able to truly grow into a professional baseball player,” Lee added.
From Dreams to Reality: A Legacy of Achievement
Baek In-chun’s belief in Lee Seung-yeop’s potential ultimately materialized into reality. Lee went on to become a representative home run hitter for South Korea, setting numerous home run records in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). His success extended to Japanese professional baseball, fulfilling Baek’s early prediction.
Lee Seung-yeop reflected on this remarkable journey: “As a result, I became the home run hitter I dreamed of and grew into a player who could hit many home runs.” He reiterated his deep gratitude, stating, “The person who made me who I am today, the person who led me to become the player I dreamed of, was the coach.”
Baek In-chun’s Enduring Impact on Korean Baseball
Baek In-chun leaves behind a significant legacy in Korean baseball history. He played professionally in Japan for 19 years, from 1963 to 1981, before the inception of the KBO. During his time in Japan, he achieved recognition as a top hitter, notably reaching the Pacific League’s top batter spot with a.319 batting average in 1975.
Upon returning to Korea, Baek began his career in the newly formed KBO in 1982 as a player-coach for MBC. In that inaugural season, he recorded a batting average of.412, a single-season record that remains unbroken in the KBO league to this day. He later served as a player-coach for the Sammi Superstars and managed the LG Twins, Samsung Lions, and Lotte Giants.
His tenure with the Samsung Lions during their formative years was particularly influential, playing a crucial role in nurturing the young Lee Seung-yeop and helping him blossom into a powerful home run hitter.
A Final Farewell and KBO’s Tribute
Baek In-chun passed away on November 15th at 6:41 PM. In recognition of his immense contributions to the development of Korean baseball, the KBO announced that it would hold a memorial service in his honor.
This marks the second time the KBO has held such a service, the first being for former KBO Secretary-General Lee Yong-il in September of the previous year. The wake was held at the traditional hall of the Cheonan Dankook University Hospital, with the funeral scheduled for November 17th at 8:00 AM.
Upon hearing the news of his respected mentor’s passing, Lee Seung-yeop conveyed his heartfelt sentiments: “Coach, please don’t suffer anymore. I hope you can rest peacefully and happily in heaven.” He expressed his sincere gratitude once more: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for instilling a great dream in my baseball life and for guiding me to achieve that dream.”
Lee concluded by promising to carry forward the lessons learned and the self-confidence instilled by Baek: “I will never forget the things I learned from you and the self-confidence you gave me.”
A Message of Gratitude and Respect
The former coach, who inspired a young player on the cusp of adulthood to look towards a larger world, received a final message of gratitude from the player who grew to represent Korean baseball. “Coach, thank you so much. And I respected you greatly. Please rest in peace. I offer my condolences to the deceased,” Lee Seung-yeop stated, bidding a final farewell to the man who profoundly shaped his life and career.
