English Premier League club Aston Villa is reportedly intensifying its pursuit of Japanese national team goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Previously, Villa had identified Suzuki and Robin Olsen of Aston Villa as potential replacements should Martinez leave.

Earlier in the summer, after rejecting several offers from Juventus for Martinez, Aston Villa had informed their backup goalkeeping targets that Martinez was expected to remain with the club. He is a very important player in next season’s project.” He further clarified, “Reports from the media regarding a transfer to Juventus are different from the club’s actual position. We expect Martinez to continue showing outstanding performance with his teammates.”

Zion Suzuki was born in New Jersey, USA, to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother, before moving to Japan to grow up and begin his football career. He made his professional debut with J.League club Kashima Antlers before a loan spell in Belgium. He then transferred to Belgian club Sint-Truiden in 2024, where he quickly secured the starting goalkeeper position. In his two seasons with Sint-Truiden, he has accumulated 57 appearances in the Belgian top flight.
Suzuki has also become a key figure for the Japanese national team, serving as their starting goalkeeper during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He started in all four of Japan’s matches in the tournament, including their Round of 16 clash against Brazil.
