Comedian Yoo Min-sang has revealed that he has begun using diet injections following a startling comment from a doctor during a recent health examination. The revelation came during a broadcast of MBN’s ‘Sokpulisho Dongchimi’ on the 15th, which focused on the theme, “Are You Not Going to Lose Weight?” Yoo Min-sang shared the specific circumstances that prompted his serious approach to weight management.
A Doctor’s Stark Observation Sparks Change
During a routine health check-up, Yoo Min-sang recounted the moment a doctor remarked, “You know there aren’t many plump grandfathers, right?” The doctor further elaborated, stating that among those who live to a very old age, there are no individuals described as overweight. This direct and impactful statement from the physician served as a significant wake-up call for the comedian.
“I was shocked by the doctor’s bluntness,” Yoo Min-sang admitted. The stark reality presented by the medical professional spurred him to take decisive action regarding his weight. Consequently, he has now embarked on a new regimen that includes diet injections.
“I’ve started diet injections recently,” Yoo Min-sang explained. “Originally, I just ate whatever I wanted, but now I’m reducing my intake and actively managing my weight.” This marks a significant shift in his approach to diet and health.
Reflecting on Past Weight and Childhood
The broadcast also featured childhood photographs of Yoo Min-sang, offering a stark contrast to his current appearance. When compared to his present physique, his younger self appeared considerably slimmer. Fellow panelist Lee Hong-ryeol humorously remarked, “He was normal back then,” eliciting laughter from the audience.
However, Yoo Min-sang reminisced about his childhood, sharing, “Since I was a baby, my nickname has always been ‘Flying Tonkatsu’ (a type of fried pork cutlet).” He added, “Even back then, I wasn’t told I was skinny. I was always a big kid.” This suggests that a larger build has been a consistent aspect of his life.
A History of Significant Weight Loss
Yoo Min-sang also disclosed past experiences of losing over 20 kilograms (approximately 44 pounds). He explained that after concluding his popular KBS2 ‘Gag Concert’ segment, ‘Dad and Son,’ he decided to lose weight with the intention of getting married.
“After doing ‘Dad and Son’ for a long time, I received many misunderstandings that I must already be married with a son,” he explained. “I felt I couldn’t continue like this. I decided I needed to lose weight before getting married.””
In his pursuit of weight loss, Yoo Min-sang experimented with extreme methods. He attempted a ‘lemon detox’ diet, consuming only lemon water for a week, and also followed a chicken breast diet. He shared the challenges he faced, including eating seasoned chicken breast as a side dish with rice, highlighting the difficulties of such restrictive diets.
The Key to Past Success: Diet and Exercise
Ultimately, Yoo Min-sang’s successful 20-kilogram weight loss was achieved through a combination of dietary control and exercise. “In the end, I lost 20 kilograms by eating less and exercising a lot,” he stated. “I endured the temptation to eat and reduced my food intake, and I also engaged in physical activities I enjoy, like farming.”
However, complacency after his weight loss led to weight regain. Yoo Min-sang described a situation where, after losing a significant amount of weight, he attended a company dinner. “I ate because I had to at the company dinner, but I thought I wouldn’t gain much weight,” he recalled. “I thought, ‘Eating a little doesn’t make you gain weight.'”
“But right after that, I gained weight,” he confessed with a laugh. “That was the door opening (to regaining weight).” This anecdote humorously illustrates how quickly weight can return if one becomes less vigilant after achieving initial success.
Current Approach and Future Outlook
Yoo Min-sang’s current decision to use diet injections signifies a renewed commitment to managing his health and weight. The doctor’s direct advice, coupled with his past experiences, has motivated him to adopt a more structured approach. While he has previously succeeded in losing substantial weight through diet and exercise, the recent medical feedback has prompted him to explore additional methods like injections.
His journey highlights the ongoing challenges many face with weight management, even after achieving success. The comedian’s candid sharing of his struggles and his current efforts resonate with audiences who understand the complexities of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. His willingness to be open about his experiences, including past dieting failures and current strategies, offers a relatable perspective on the pursuit of health and well-being.
