Speculation Mounts Over Kylian Mbappé’s Potential Move to Major League Soccer
The possibility of witnessing Kylian Mbappé play alongside Son Heung-min has ignited significant discussion following reports of the French superstar considering a move to Major League Soccer (MLS).
LA Clubs Emerge as Potential Destinations
Transfer market expert Ekrem Konur indicated on his personal social media that both LA Galaxy and LAFC are being discussed as potential future destinations for Mbappé. Both clubs are recognized for offering a high-quality lifestyle in Southern California. Konur stated that the 27-year-old French forward is not ruling out the possibility of a move to the United States at some point in his career.
While it remains unclear if Mbappé is actively considering a move to the U.S., an immediate transfer to MLS seems unlikely at this stage. Similar to the transitions of Son Heung-min and Lionel Messi, MLS is currently experiencing a growth period, but it is still not perceived as a league for players at the peak of their careers.
Mbappé’s Career Aspirations
Mbappé, born in 1998, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most gifted players. Despite already achieving a World Cup victory, he has other significant career goals yet to be met, notably winning the UEFA Champions League and securing the Ballon d’Or. His recent move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid is seen as a step towards achieving these European accolades.
It is anticipated that Mbappé will dedicate the next few years to competing for Champions League titles and the Ballon d’Or with Real Madrid. Only when he acknowledges the natural decline in his abilities and faces a career crossroads might he consider an MLS move to conclude his playing days.
Potential Timeline for an MLS Move
For a hypothetical reunion with Son Heung-min at LAFC, Mbappé would need to join the club no later than the start of the 2029 season. Son Heung-min signed a 2+1+1 year contract with LAFC in the summer of 2025, with the potential to stay until 2029 if all extension options are exercised. Given that two years would have passed by then, it is improbable that Mbappé would still be at his absolute peak, making a joint appearance challenging under current projections.
However, if Son Heung-min extends his stay with LAFC beyond 2029, the situation could change.
Mbappé’s Previous Comments on MLS
Mbappé has previously addressed questions about a potential move to MLS. When asked about the possibility ahead of a World Cup qualifier, he responded with ambiguity, stating, “Perhaps so, I don’t know.” He added, “The United States has a different culture. I have always been drawn to cultures without limits. Will I come here before the end of my career?” He did not provide a definitive answer but alluded to discussions with David Beckham.
In the present, Mbappé is focused on the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he aims to lead France to another title. His current performance in the tournament, scoring four goals in two matches, highlights his exceptional form.
