Jang Yu-bin Secures Thrilling Win at Hana Bank Invitational
The highly anticipated East Asian golf showdown concluded with a dramatic victory for Jang Yu-bin, solidifying his status as a rising star in South Korean men’s golf. The Hana Bank Invitational, held at Namchuncheon Country Club in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, from June 18th to 21st, culminated in a fiercely contested final round.
Jang Yu-bin emerged victorious with a total score of 10-under par 274, marking his second consecutive win and his first multiple-win season. This prestigious tournament, now in its eighth year and organized by the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA), effectively served as a ‘Best of East Asia’ championship, attracting top golfers from the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) and the China Golf Association (CGA).
A Personal Triumph for Jang Yu-bin
For Jang Yu-bin, this victory held special significance. Last year, he narrowly missed the top spot, finishing as runner-up to Japan’s Takumi Kanaya. Overcoming the challenge in the final round against a field that included strong contenders from China, Jang expressed his profound joy and emotion. “I had a lot of regret after losing to Japan two years ago in the Korea-Japan match play,” he shared with a bright smile. “To win this year, with Chinese players also competing, makes it even more special and deeply moving.”
Elite Players Converge for East Asian Golf Summit
The tournament witnessed an intense rivalry among golfers from South Korea, China, and Japan. The field boasted domestic stars such as Ham Jeong-woo, Park Sang-hyun, and Moon Do-yeop, alongside defending champion Takumi Kanaya, JGTO points leader Shogenji Tatsunori, and Japanese major champion Semikara Taiya. China’s next-generation talent, Chen Guxin, also participated, creating a high-caliber competition representing the pinnacle of Asian golf.
Participating athletes lauded the event. Takumi Kanaya commented, “The competition among players from three countries has been a great learning experience.” Chen Guxin echoed these sentiments, stating, “It was an honor to compete alongside outstanding golfers from Korea and Japan, and I eagerly wish to participate in such East Asian exchange tournaments in the future.”
A Festival of Golf and Community Engagement
Beyond the elite competition, the Hana Bank Invitational transformed into a summer golf festival, enhanced by Chuncheon’s beautiful natural scenery and the diverse entertainment options provided by the Hana Financial Group. Golf fans attending the event not only witnessed the thrilling play of the three nations’ top golfers but also enjoyed a variety of food and activities available at the gallery plaza.
During the weekend, autograph sessions with Ham Jeong-woo, Park Sang-hyun, and Heo In-hoi were held at the Hana Financial Group’s promotional center, offering fans unique souvenirs. A particularly popular attraction was the ‘Sticker Tour,’ which involved collecting five stickers by visiting designated spots on the course, adding an extra layer of fun to the spectator experience.
Hana Financial Group facilitated a comfortable viewing environment by operating shuttle buses connecting the gallery parking lot and the Namchuncheon area, offering free admission to gallery visitors utilizing the Namchuncheon area. The group also actively promoted ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives through various donation programs during the tournament.
Charitable Initiatives Highlight the Spirit of Golf
A representative charitable event was the ‘Connected by Hana Tikitaka Putting Challenge,’ held before the opening ceremony, which featured players from all three countries aiming to support the South Korean national football team. This challenge was successfully completed on the first attempt, thanks to the players’ remarkable teamwork, resulting in an immediate donation of 10 million won.
Additionally, donations were accumulated through successful shots on the “Everybody Zone” on holes 1 and 11, and the “Hana Star Zone” on the 18th hole fairway. Approximately 250 million won raised through these initiatives will be entirely dedicated to the revitalization of the local community in Chuncheon, including support for low-income households.
The Hana Bank Invitational has firmly established itself as a premier platform for East Asian men’s golf. It is poised to contribute significantly to the development of Asian golf, fostering growth among players from South Korea, China, and Japan as a top-tier Asian golf festival.
