Authorities have arrested a man in China following allegations of severe animal cruelty, including the abuse and death of dogs and cats he reportedly took in under the guise of adoption.
Investigation Uncovers Disturbing Claims of Animal Abuse
Local police in the city of Zhengzhou, China, have detained a 39-year-old man identified as Mr. Li. The arrest, made on the 10th, is based on suspicions of violating animal protection laws and mistreatment. Officials have confirmed that the detention period could extend up to 15 days, representing one of the strongest measures available under current regulations. Investigators stated that Mr. Li had falsely claimed a desire to adopt a dog, only to subsequently abuse or kill the animals.
While specific details of the alleged offenses have not been publicly disclosed, reports the scene indicate that the investigation gained momentum after Mr. Li was photographed throwing animals from the balcony of his apartment in the city of Gaozheng. Rescue volunteers reportedly discovered severely injured dogs, and subsequent investigations pointed to problems with the disposal of animal remains and alleged abandonment.
Pattern of Deception and Alleged Past Abuses
Evidence suggests Mr. Li frequently posted online expressing his willingness to adopt abandoned animals. He reportedly cited his stable family environment, including a wife and two young children, and his experience with pet ownership as reasons for his suitability. However, in April, concerns were raised by some animal welfare advocates who posted warnings about him, claiming a history of animal abuse with both dogs and cats.
Earlier this month, a woman who had entrusted a rescued stray puppy to Mr. Li became suspicious. After reviewing apartment complex CCTV footage, she discovered that the puppy’s mother had allegedly been abused and died. The woman requested the return of the puppy, but her request was reportedly refused. When she reported the incident to the police, she was informed that there was no legal basis to compel the return of the animal at that time.
Escalating Public Outcry and Calls for Legal Reform
The situation escalated dramatically on the 6th when a video emerged showing Mr. Li allegedly abusing a dog on his apartment balcony. This video circulated widely within local animal welfare communities, quickly becoming a national issue. Animal rescue organizations estimate that Mr. Li is responsible for the deaths of at least four dogs and cats, most of which were animals he had taken in through adoption.
On the 7th, over 100 volunteers gathered outside Mr. Li’s residence to protest. During the demonstration, a severely injured two-month-old puppy was discovered on the apartment building’s stairs. Volunteers believe this puppy was also thrown from the balcony by Mr. Li. Veterinary examinations revealed the puppy had lost teeth, its tail was partially severed, and it suffered multiple fractures.
As news of this case has spread rapidly online, there are growing calls within China for the establishment of independent legislation specifically to punish animal cruelty. Current wildlife protection laws in China primarily focus on endangered species, and domestic pets are not generally covered under these protections. Netizens have expressed outrage, with comments demanding the perpetrator’s face be revealed and that he face strict punishment. Many have also expressed sentiments such as, “He has abandoned his humanity,” and “May you be reborn as an animal in the afterlife.””
