Rookie Pitcher Leads Samsung Futures to Redemption Game
The Samsung Lions Futures team has achieved a significant turnaround, securing a decisive 7-1 victory against the Ulsan Whales. This win comes just a day after a disheartening 7-11 loss to the same Ulsan team. The resurgence was spearheaded by the impressive performance of starting pitcher Park Ju-young, a player discovered by the Samsung scouting team.
Park Ju-young’s Stellar Performance
Park Ju-young, a 138th-round draft pick in the 2026 rookie draft, delivered a dominant performance, pitching six innings and allowing only one run. His season record now stands at 2 wins. Despite still being a development player, Park’s potential is considered exceptionally high. He has consistently received praise for his stable pitching mechanics and clean delivery since his high school days. The Samsung scouting team had been closely monitoring his progress before identifying him as a key prospect.
Last year, Park showcased his capabilities by recording 7 wins and 1 loss with an ERA of 1.85 in 16 games. This season, he made his professional debut on April 25th against the LG Twins and has been a consistent presence in the Futures team’s starting rotation, showing a steady upward trajectory.
His first quality start came on May 18th against Ulsan, where he pitched six innings, allowing no runs, two walks, and striking out four batters. He followed this up with his first win of the season on May 30th against the Goyang Heroes, pitching five innings and giving up three runs. This latest victory further solidifies his growing presence as a starting pitcher.
Offensive Support Powers Victory
The Samsung offense also came alive early in the game. In the first inning, a hit-by-pitch and a single put runners on first and second. Although the Ulsan starter, Gobayashi, managed to induce a ground ball that resulted in an out at third, Samsung managed to score the first run. In the second inning, with one out, Shim Jae-hoon’s double and Kim Jae-sang’s walk created further scoring opportunities. Kim Sang-min and Kim Jae-hyuk followed with consecutive hits, driving in two more runs.
The scoring continued in the fifth inning when Yoon Jeong-bin hit a double, bringing in Lee Chang-yong from third base. In the seventh inning, with the bases loaded following hits from Ham Su-ho and walks to Yoon Jeong-bin and Park Se-hyeok, Kim Tae-hoon cleared the bases with a decisive hit. Ulsan managed to score a single run in the sixth inning via Alex Hall’s RBI single, but it was not enough to overcome Samsung’s lead.
Bullpen Solidifies Win
Following Park Ju-young, the Samsung bullpen saw solid performances from Park Ju-hyeok, Hong Jun-young, and Jin Hee-seong, who each pitched one inning without allowing any runs. Yoon Jeong-bin was a standout at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kim Jae-hyuk also contributed with two hits and an RBI, while Kim Tae-hoon added two RBIs.
Ulsan’s starting pitcher Gobayashi was tagged with the loss after giving up two hits, a walk, and one earned run in the first inning. Despite multi-hit games from Oh Hyun-seok and Bae Young-bin, the Ulsan team ultimately fell short.
Looking Ahead
This victory marks a significant morale boost for the Samsung Futures team after their previous day’s defeat. The performance of Park Ju-young, the 11th-round draft pick, has once again highlighted his promising potential. All eyes will be on whether he can continue to establish himself as a new source of hope for the Samsung Futures mound.
