Singer Lee Seung-hwan has received a court-ordered compensation of 125 million won from Gumi City officials for a canceled concert linked to venue violations. Despite the payout, he continues to press for a direct public apology from Mayor Kim Si-jang.
Court Ruling and Social Media Response
On the 11th, Lee shared his thoughts on social media regarding the judgment letter. “The document notes the event was canceled under force majeure, yet deep concerns about safety went unaddressed, leaving persistent anxiety unresolved,” he wrote.
Lee expressed surprise at Mayor Kim’s post-judgment remarks. The mayor had previously assured that “citizens’ safety remains the top priority, with thorough preparations in place.”
Call for Personal Accountability
In a pointed response, Lee urged the mayor: “With four more years in office, embrace the weight of responsibility and authority. I couldn’t perform well this time—make it sincere, just once.”
At 61 years old (born 1965), Lee addressed the 55-year-old mayor (born 1969), adding, “A genuine apology, even once, would allow forgiveness and mend the hurt felt by a billion fans. Celebrities bow sometimes too—do so as mayor.”
Lee remains firm, stating he will not easily overlook Gumi City’s actions. “Having already committed during the Dream Project collaboration, excluding external disputes over unpaid compensation, contribute to making Gumi the top mayor experience,” he remarked.
Event Background and Compensation Details
The dispute stems from a planned charity concert featuring Lee Seung-hwan and Dream Project collaborators, aimed at 100 prospective attendees. Gumi City organized the event with Mayor Kim as lead, but issues arose over safety protocols during restrictions.
The Seoul Central District Court (Minsa 913 Branch) ruled on the 8th, awarding refunds as follows:
- 35 million won to Lee Seung-hwan
- 75 million won to Dream Project
- 15 million won each to 100 attendees
Totaling 125 million won. However, claims of personal compensation to the mayor lack verification.
