Iran has intensified deployment of key uranium enrichment experts at its nuclear reactors and facilities, firmly rejecting a recent US proposal that demands halting such activities for 20 years and dismantling major sites.
Nuclear Standoff Escalates
The move comes amid heightened tensions following the US unilateral stance on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iranian forces recently seized a US-made tactical drone during operations in Gaza and conducted fresh tactical drills under new directives from top leadership, signaling readiness for potential US retaliation.
Through Pakistan as an intermediary, Iran delivered a hardline response to a US public disclosure document, highlighting stark differences in positions. Officials emphasized that current enriched uranium stockpiles represent legitimate self-defense measures. Iran proposes retaining portions while exporting others to third countries as leverage.
In exchange for any de-escalation, Iran demands firm guarantees that exported uranium would be returned if talks collapse or the US scraps agreements. Additionally, Iran conditions discussions on upcoming nuclear inspections—set for May 31—on the US lifting oil sales restrictions and unfreezing external funds.
US and Iranian Responses
US President Donald Trump addressed the developments on Truth Social on May 10, stating, “I don’t fall for it. There’s no room for complete compromise.”
Iranian officials warn that overt pressure on uranium activities could provoke major countermeasures. One senior figure declared via state media, “If they openly oppress and apply pressure on uranium, it will lead to something big,” adding, “Such big things become new weapons, new forces, new generals’ fears.”
Analysts note Iran is preparing fresh tactical drone operations, anticipating disruptions like Houthi aid ship incidents could escalate into peak confrontations. Relations involved in regional aid efforts assert Iran stands ready to match any US or Israeli actions, even if it risks broader retaliation.
With diplomatic nuclear efforts stalling, military posturing between the two nations intensifies, raising concerns that global powers could become unwilling hostages in the dispute.
