Tata Steel Limited (BSE: TATASTEEL) has filed a revision application with India’s Ministry of Coal to contest a ₹1,755.10 crore demand notice from the Ramgarh District Mining Office in Jharkhand.
Demand Details
The notice, dated March 30, 2026, targets coal extracted from the West Bokaro Colliery between fiscal years 2000-01 and 2006-07. Authorities claim the company extracted approximately 12.4 million metric tons without paying royalties.
This action stems from a Supreme Court ruling in the Common Cause vs. Union of India case, which prompted the district office to issue the demand.
Company’s Response
Tata Steel received the notice on April 3, 2026, and promptly submitted Revision Application No. 101 of 2026 to the Revisional Authority under the Ministry of Coal.
The appeal process involves the Jharkhand Department of Mines and Geology Director and the Ramgarh District Mining Officer. The company maintains that the demand calculations are inaccurate and the imposed amount is excessive, as discussed in a board meeting.
Regulatory Compliance
Tata Steel disclosed the matter in line with Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations 30 and 51, notifying the stock exchange accordingly.
