Seventy-three Korean nationals who’ve been detained in Cambodia over alleged involvement in rip-off crimes will likely be forcibly returned residence for investigation, Cheong Wa Dae stated Thursday.
A chartered flight will depart from Incheon Worldwide Airport, west of Seoul, at 8:45 p.m. and return at 9:10 a.m. on Friday carrying the suspects, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung instructed reporters.
The suspects have been detained in Cambodia by a joint investigation group and are accused of swindling a complete of 486.7 billion received ($331.5 million) from 869 Korean victims, Kang stated.
It marks the most important repatriation of prison suspects, following a joint investigation involving Korean and Cambodian police, in addition to the Nationwide Intelligence Service, in response to the spokesperson.
The joint investigation group raided seven rip-off compounds, together with websites in Sihanoukville, Poipet and Mondulkiri Province in December, and rounded up the suspects.
“Arrest warrants have been issued for the entire suspects, and they are going to be handed over to investigative authorities instantly upon arrival for thorough investigation and judicial proceedings,” Kang stated. “(The federal government) plans to confiscate prison proceeds by monitoring down the suspects’ hid property to the top.”
The suspects are members of organized rip-off syndicates that carried out pretend romance and funding schemes and extorted cash from members of the family of individuals detained at rip-off facilities in Cambodia. Some used deepfake know-how to deceive victims and underwent cosmetic surgery to evade legislation enforcement, she stated.
