Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency now handles the investigation into a complaint against the joint prosecution-police task force over its decision not to indict Democratic Party’s former Busan mayoral candidate Jeon Jae-su on Unification Church cash receipt suspicions.
Case Transfer Details
The complaint, initially assigned to Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul, moved to the agency’s Wide-Area Investigation Team’s Anti-Corruption Division on April 28. Dongdaemun Police Station Chief confirmed the transfer through an official notice, stating that the Wide-Area Investigation Team already probes related matters from the same incident.
Background of the Complaint
Former Seoul City Councilor Lee Jong-bae filed the complaint on April 12, accusing the task force head of mishandling the probe into Jeon Jae-su by failing to apply relevant laws properly. The case landed at Dongdaemun Police Station on April 21.
Prior to the complaint, the task force opted against indicting Jeon on April 10, citing expired statutes of limitations or insufficient evidence.
Task Force’s Rationale
The joint task force explained its no-indictment decision covers Jeon Jae-su’s alleged bribe receipts and Political Funds Act violations, as well as similar issues involving former Democratic Party floor leader Im Jong-seok and ex-Future United Party floor leader Kim Gyu-hwan. Officials noted that statutes of limitations had run out or supporting evidence proved inadequate, leading to the closure without charges.
