Authorities have summoned a young ambulance driver for investigation after he struck and killed a 70-year-old pedestrian while speeding with sirens blaring in Seoul.
Details of the Fatal Crash
The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on May 14 near the Sangbong Hospital area. The 20-year-old male driver operated the ambulance from a nearby hospital and entered the scene aggressively. Investigators issued him a summons on May 15 for a special express traffic violation, deducting a severe 70 points from his license.
The victim had shifted to the left lane moments before the collision but could not avoid the impact.
Driver’s Explanation Under Scrutiny
The driver told investigators he activated the siren to gain time, changed lanes to the left toward a non-motorized area, and honked his horn. Full CCTV footage captured the entire sequence, showing the ambulance pushing forward despite the circumstances not involving a life-threatening emergency.
However, a witness who was struck by the ambulance during the lane change stated the driver abruptly veered from another lane without prior indication. This account contradicts the driver’s version and forms a key part of the ongoing probe.
Police continue to review evidence to determine full accountability in this tragic event.
