Police have arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of illegally filming women in a changing room at the Caribbean Bay water park in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The suspect allegedly disguised himself with a wig and other accessories to enter the women’s facility and record patrons.
Suspect’s Alleged Actions and Disguise
According to police reports on October 22nd, the Yongin Dongbu Police Station has requested an arrest warrant for the man, identified as ‘A,’ on charges related to the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, specifically involving the use of cameras and trespassing in a place intended for sexual purposes.
Investigators believe that ‘A’ entered the women’s changing room at Caribbean Bay on two separate occasions last month, around mid-September and again on September 30th. During these instances, he is accused of using a digital camera and a small recording device to film unsuspecting visitors. To conceal his identity and gender, ‘A’ reportedly wore a short-haired wig, sunglasses, and a mask, making it difficult for anyone to recognize him as male.
Evidence suggests that ‘A’ entered the water park during the afternoon hours and remained inside for approximately four to five hours on each occasion. On September 30th, his suspicious behavior while wandering through the women’s changing room reportedly drew the attention of other patrons and park staff. He was confronted by a visitor and an employee, at which point his male identity was revealed.
Escape, Investigation, and Arrest
Following the confrontation, ‘A’ is said to have fled the scene. After receiving a report from the park, the police initiated an investigation. By reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas, investigators were able to trace ‘A’s movements, identify him, and determine his residential address.
Approximately 20 days after fleeing, ‘A’ was apprehended by police on October 21st at his residence in Seoul. During initial questioning, ‘A’ reportedly claimed that he acted out of curiosity and filmed the women solely for his own viewing, asserting that he did not distribute the footage externally.
Evidence Seized and Ongoing Investigation
During the arrest at ‘A’s residence, police seized items believed to have been used in the commission of the crime. These included the digital camera, the small recording device, and storage media containing what are believed to be the illicitly recorded videos. A digital forensic examination is currently underway on these seized devices.
As of now, two specific victims have been identified. However, the police intend to conduct further investigations based on the forensic analysis results. Their goal is to identify any additional victims, determine the full extent of the recorded material, and ascertain whether the footage was shared or distributed outside of the suspect’s personal possession.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about privacy and security in public spaces, particularly in facilities where individuals are in a state of undress. Water parks and similar recreational venues often face challenges in preventing such violations, relying on a combination of surveillance, staff vigilance, and user reporting to maintain a safe environment.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have been a victim or has further information related to this case to come forward and contact the Yongin Dongbu Police Station. The investigation is expected to continue as digital forensics provide more insights into the scope of the alleged crimes.
