The South Korean professional baseball league (KBO) is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity, with attendance figures soaring and projections indicating a historic season. The league is on track to surpass 13 million spectators for the first time ever, building on the momentum from previous record-breaking seasons.
Record-Breaking Attendance Trends
In the current 2026 season, the KBO League has already drawn a total of 7,633,775 spectators across 424 games in the first half of the season. This figure significantly surpasses last year’s first-half attendance, which marked the first time the league broke the 7 million mark. The league’s consistent growth in popularity is evident, with the 2024 season being the first to exceed 10 million total attendance.
The upward trend began in earnest in the 2024 season, which saw the league break the 10 million spectator mark for the first time in its history. In the following year, 2025, the KBO League set a new record by drawing 12,312,519 fans over the 720-game regular season.
This season’s enthusiasm is palpable from the outset. The positive sentiment was amplified by the South Korean national team’s strong performance in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March, where they reached the quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years. This success further ignited fan interest, contributing to record-breaking attendance during the WBC exhibition games, which saw 440,047 spectators over 60 games.
The opening of the 2026 regular season also saw a strong turnout, with the first 10 games on March 29-30 selling out, signaling a vibrant start to the season.
Milestones Achieved at Unprecedented Pace
The KBO League has been achieving key attendance milestones at an accelerated pace this season:
- 1 Million Spectators: Reached in just 14 days and 55 games, a new league record.
- Subsequent Milestones: 2 million (117 games), 3 million (166 games), 4 million (222 games), 5 million (275 games), and 6 million (350 games) were all surpassed in record time.
- 7 Million Spectators: This significant milestone was achieved in just 388 games on May 30, breaking last year’s record of 405 games by 17 games. This marks the first time the 7 million spectator mark has been reached in under 400 games.
Team-Specific Performance and Fan Engagement
Several teams are contributing significantly to the league’s overall attendance success:
- LG Twins: The team has been a standout performer, being the only club to surpass 1 million home game spectators in the first half of the season, drawing 1,000,000 fans across 36 of their 43 home games.
- Samsung Lions: Engaged in a close competition with LG, Samsung attracted 976,271 fans to their 42 home games, averaging an impressive 23,245 spectators per game, the highest average in the league.
The overall league average attendance stands at 18,004 per game, a notable increase of approximately 4.5% compared to the same period last year (17,228). If this growth trend continues, the KBO League is well-positioned to achieve its historic 13 million spectator goal this season.
Challenges Amidst Success
Despite the booming popularity, issues such as ticket scalping persist. In response, the KBO and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism launched an anti-scalping campaign earlier this year. However, the problem remains a challenge, with scalpers reportedly using automated programs to buy tickets in bulk and resell them at inflated prices for significant profit.
The upcoming enforcement of the revised anti-scalping law in late August is anticipated to help foster a healthier fan culture and ensure the sustained growth of the KBO League’s popularity.
