A woman in her 40s has died after losing consciousness during a scuba diving incident near Munseom off the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island.
Details of the Scuba Diving Accident
Emergency responders received a report around 1:07 p.m. on April 20 near Seogwi-dong, where the diver was found unresponsive underwater. Nearby divers pulled her from the water, and a passing vessel assisted in bringing her to Seogwipo Port.
Fire safety officials took over at the port, noting she was in cardiac arrest. Paramedics rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her condition during treatment.
Coast Guard Investigation Underway
Authorities confirm the scuba dive occurred without apparent supervision from a dive leader. Officials from the coast guard are probing the circumstances, including potential factors like equipment issues or diver experience, to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
Scuba diving remains popular in Jeju’s clear waters, but safety experts emphasize the need for certified guides and proper checks to prevent such incidents.
