Upcoming concerts by global stars like TWICE at Tokyo’s National Stadium are set to draw massive crowds, but they pose challenges for nearby Meiji Jingu Stadium, home of the NPB Central League’s Yakult Swallows.
Stadium Proximity Creates Disruptions
The National Stadium boasts a capacity of up to 68,000 spectators and hosts major sports events alongside high-profile music performances. Events scheduled for April 25-26 and 28 feature TWICE’s world tour, highlighting its status as a premier venue that only top artists can secure.
These large-scale shows directly affect the open-air Meiji Jingu Stadium next door. Noise and fireworks from concerts frequently interrupt baseball games, testing players’ focus during critical moments.
Recent Fireworks Interruptions vs. Yomiuri Giants
During a recent matchup against the Yomiuri Giants, fireworks from Mrs. GREEN APPLE’s concert at the National Stadium caused multiple suspensions. With Yakult leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning at two outs and a runner on first, play halted as the display lit up the sky.
Manager Takahiro Ikeyama and the team paused in the first-base dugout, watching the spectacle unfold. After about 30 seconds, the game resumed amid applause from the stands.
Later, in the top of the ninth with two outs and a runner on first during Bobby Dalbec’s third-base hit situation, another fireworks burst delayed action for one minute. Reliever Hose Kiwada issued a walk to the batter following the stop.
Similar issues arose on April 18 against Yomiuri, where ninth-inning fireworks paused Yakult’s offensive rally. The Swallows secured an extra-innings win that day and aimed to extend their streak on the 19th.
Fan Reactions and Managerial Concerns
Fans cheered the vibrant displays, treating them as bonus entertainment. However, on-site personnel showed visible frustration over the disruptions.
Manager Takahiro Ikeyama noted, “Situations like these can hand the opposing team a chance to shift the momentum.”
Despite the interruptions, Yakult maintains a strong hold on first place in the Central League with a 14-5 record as of April 19, leading the Hanshin Tigers (14-6) by half a game.
