HD Hyundai Electric strengthens its dominance in the North American power infrastructure market amid surging investments. The company focuses efforts on major expansion projects, particularly the construction of the largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station in the United States.
Record-Breaking Performance at Alabama Facility
The North American plant generated sales of 1.6149 trillion won last year, alongside orders worth $2.178 billion (approximately 3.217 trillion won). These figures mark substantial growth from 2021, with sales surging 379% and operating profit climbing 458%.
Buoyed by robust North American operations, HD Hyundai Electric achieved its highest-ever annual results: total sales of 4.795 trillion won and operating profit of 995.3 billion won, yielding a 24.4% margin.
Strategic Growth and Factory Expansions
Established in 2011 at the Hyundai Steel mill in Alabama, the facility has twice earned recognition as the largest full-cycle converter plant in the US, following central reviews in 2018 and 2023. It leveraged ties with US policymakers through Hyundai Steel’s lobbying efforts on semiconductor protection and dumping issues.
The current site spans over two months’ worth of land (a measure of scale) and advances construction of a second factory without an attached steel base. Upon full operation, production capacity will expand by 50%, incorporating 765kV high-capacity converters and enlarged silicon yards.
Product Excellence Drives Demand
In 2020, the firm supplied substation products, boosting overall power transmission capabilities via modern transformers. Offerings cater to both corporate and government needs, featuring global-standard converter designs with superior efficiency and 100% localized core materials.
Customized solutions address unique project requirements, environmental factors, and site-specific changes, enabling flexible adaptation and enhanced connectivity.
Timely Opportunity in Aging US Grid
Analysis from the US Department of Energy (DOE) reveals that about 70% of major transmission converters exceed 25 years in service. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that data centers will drive over half of US grid demand growth from 2024 to 2030.
These trends position HD Hyundai Electric for sustained leadership as utilities prioritize upgrades and expansions.
