Director Jang Hang-jun, who has helmed the festival as executive chairman since last year, personally greeted attendees, warmly embracing director Park Chan-wook upon his arrival and escorting him to his seat.
The opening ceremony, expertly hosted by comedian Jang Do-yeon and actor Moon Sang-min, commenced with a performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by the band Kim Blues. Actor Ahn Jae-hong, who served as the festival’s ambassador, shared how he came to be involved. “Director Jang called me in September and asked, ‘What are you doing in September?’, which led to me taking on the role of ambassador,” he explained. Ahn Jae-hong expressed his honor in being part of such a “special and romantic festival where film and music converge,” and extended his gratitude for the invitation.
Chinese Composer Zhao Jiping Honored with Music Award
This year’s Jeonju Music Award was presented to Chinese composer Zhao Jiping. Renowned for his work on films such as “Guo Du” and “The Farewell,” Zhao Jiping has captivated audiences with his unique musical style, which masterfully blends traditional Chinese folk music with Western orchestral arrangements. His innovative approach to film scoring has earned him international acclaim.
Presenting the award, director Park Chan-wook reminisced about his past experiences at the festival. “I’ve attended the Jeonju festival several times,” he recalled with a smile. “I have a funny memory of attending once on opening day when it rained heavily, and we all shared umbrellas that were handed out.” His lighthearted anecdote brought a sense of shared history and camaraderie.
Upon receiving the award from director Park, Zhao Jiping shared his perspective on the universal power of music. “Music transcends national borders and serves as a common language that resonates with all of humanity,” he stated. Following the opening ceremony, the festival screened its opening film, “The Boy from the Congo.” This acclaimed film, a significant selection at this year’s festival, offers a poignant portrayal of African youth overcoming the challenges of war and discrimination.
