Convenience store chain 7-Eleven has significantly expanded its quick commerce presence by partnering with Coupang Eats, making its products available for rapid delivery nationwide. As of recently, over 1,500 7-Eleven stores across South Korea are participating in the service, aiming to bolster the competitiveness of its physical locations by connecting them to online orders and establishing a robust 24-hour delivery system.
This collaboration allows Coupang Eats users to order a wide array of 7-Eleven items, including popular global desserts, snacks, daily necessities, and private brand (PB) exclusive products, for delivery. 7-Eleven’s strategy focuses on leveraging its unique product offerings, which are often difficult to find through other retail channels, to attract new customers on the Coupang Eats platform.
Strategic Focus on Late-Night and Overnight Demand
A key strategic element of this partnership is the focus on late-night and overnight delivery services. As Coupang Eats extends its 24-hour delivery capabilities nationwide, 7-Eleven plans to increase its delivery hours, primarily utilizing its 24-hour operating stores. This move is particularly relevant during peak seasons like summer vacation and periods with extended evening activities, where demand for immediate consumption items such as ice cream and frozen beverages tends to rise.
Data indicates a significant surge in demand during these hours. Between August 1st and 5th, 7-Eleven’s quick commerce sales from 10 PM to 2 AM increased by 63% compared to the same period in January. This growth is attributed to a combination of factors, including rising temperatures driving demand for chilled and frozen goods, and longer evening hours encouraging more late-night consumption. The convenience store chain views this as a prime opportunity to capture a larger share of the quick commerce market.
Promotional Offers to Drive Adoption
To commemorate the launch and encourage customer adoption, 7-Eleven and Coupang Eats are offering special discounts. Until August 31st, even non-members of Coupang Eats will have delivery fees waived on all orders. Furthermore, first-time customers purchasing 7-Eleven products through Coupang Eats will receive discount coupons based on their order value. Orders over 15,000 won will receive a 5,000 won discount, while orders exceeding 20,000 won will get a 6,000 won discount. Following the initial purchase, customers will receive a 1,000 won discount coupon applicable to orders of 25,000 won or more.
Expanding Delivery Network and Market Position
The integration with Coupang Eats marks a significant expansion for 7-Eleven’s delivery strategy. Previously, the convenience store had already established partnerships with other major delivery platforms like Baemin (Baedal Minjok) and Yogiyo. With the addition of Coupang Eats, 7-Eleven now has a presence on all three major delivery platforms in South Korea.
Similarly, Coupang Eats strengthens its position in the convenience store delivery sector by securing partnerships with 7-Eleven, adding to its existing collaborations with GS25, CU, and Emart24. This comprehensive network covers all major convenience store brands in the country, positioning Coupang Eats as a dominant player in the quick commerce landscape.
Future Outlook and Synergies
Ki Hyun-kyung, head of 7-Eleven’s marketing division, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential. “We anticipate creating significant quick commerce synergies by combining 7-Eleven’s robust product lineup with Coupang Eats’ powerful delivery infrastructure,” he stated. “By enhancing customer convenience through easy in-app shopping without needing to visit a physical store, we expect this collaboration to contribute to increased sales for our franchise stores and further accelerate our expansion into the quick commerce market.”
The strategic alliance between 7-Eleven and Coupang Eats is poised to redefine convenience and delivery services in South Korea. By leveraging their respective strengths, both companies aim to meet the evolving demands of consumers for fast, accessible, and diverse product options, particularly during off-peak hours. The expansion of 24-hour delivery services is expected to not only boost sales but also solidify their market positions in the rapidly growing quick commerce sector.
