The KIA Tigers baseball team has formalized a partnership with Next Base Athletes Lab in Japan, a move aimed at enhancing player development through advanced biomechanical analysis and specialized training. This initiative follows a successful short-term training stint for several pitchers in June, with the team now planning ongoing player delegations to Japan.
Strategic Player Development Initiative
The KIA Tigers have entered into a formal business agreement with Next Base Athletes Lab, a specialized training facility located in Chiba, Japan. This decision was prompted by the positive results observed from a short-term training program involving four pitchers – Lee Eui-ri, Hong Min-gyu, Kim Shi-hoon, and Kang Hyojong – in June. The team’s management expressed satisfaction with the initial outcomes, believing that even a single player demonstrating significant improvement in the latter half of the season would validate the program.
The training program at Next Base is built upon the research of Dr. Shinji Chuto, focusing on biomechanical analysis to optimize athlete development. The facility is particularly noted for its ability to provide customized training projects tailored to the physical characteristics and pitching mechanics of Asian athletes, giving it a competitive edge.
The decision to send pitchers for short-term training during the season was considered a bold move. Except for Kang Hyojong, who had recently completed his mandatory military service, the other three pitchers were part of the main roster for the 2024 season. The urgency of the situation was highlighted by Kim Shi-hoon, who recalled being told, “You have to go to Japan,” with only three days’ notice.
Lee Eui-ri’s Resurgence: A Testament to the Program
One of the most significant success stories emerging from this initiative is the remarkable turnaround of left-handed pitcher Lee Eui-ri. Titled the “ace left-hander,” Lee had a difficult first half of the season, posting a 1-6 record with a 9.42 ERA over 35.1 innings. Despite recovering from elbow surgery in late 2023 and returning to the mound in the latter half of last year, consistent results had eluded him.
The struggles continued into the current season, causing Lee considerable distress. The short-term training in Japan appears to have been a pivotal moment for him. Since returning for the second half of the season, Lee has shown marked improvement, recording one win, one hold, and a 2.35 ERA over 7.2 innings in his first five appearances.
