The KIA Tigers secured a decisive 12-2 victory over the SSG Landers on the road, extending their winning streak in the second half of the season. Pitcher James Nailed delivered a strong performance, and the offense showed consistent firepower. However, it was outfielder Kim Ho-ryeong who stole the spotlight with a series of crucial plays, including a spectacular diving catch that drew praise from teammates and became a defining moment of the game.
Tigers Dominate from the Outset
The KIA Tigers established their dominance early in the contest held at the Incheon SSG Landers Field on July 18th. The game, part of the 2024 Shinhan SOL KBO League, saw the Tigers score five runs in the top of the third inning against SSG starter Thomas Hatch. This offensive surge began with consecutive walks to Jung Hyun-chang and Kim Ho-ryeong, followed by a go-ahead double by Kasebro, and then RBI doubles from Na Sung-beom and Kim Sun-bin. Park Sang-joon capped off the rally with an RBI single, putting the Tigers firmly in control.
While pitcher James Nailed allowed two runs in the bottom of the third inning, including a solo home run by Jo Hyung-woo and an RBI double by Park Sung-han, he settled down afterward, preventing further scoring. Nailed pitched seven innings, allowing four hits (one home run) and five strikeouts against two walks, earning his sixth win of the season against five losses and marking a successful return to the mound in the second half.
The Tigers continued to build their lead, adding two runs in the sixth inning and five more in the eighth, ultimately completing their commanding victory.
Kim Ho-ryeong’s All-Around Impact
Kim Ho-ryeong was a standout performer for the Tigers, contributing significantly both offensively and defensively. Leading off for the team, he recorded three hits in four at-bats, including an infield single and a line drive double. His offensive contributions included reaching base consistently, rattling the SSG battery throughout the game. In the third inning, he was instrumental in sparking the team’s five-run rally. Later, in the sixth, he reached base as the leadoff hitter and successfully advanced to second on a stolen base, setting the stage for another run.
His most impactful moment, however, came in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out and a runner on first, SSG’s Park Sung-han hit a deep drive towards center field. Kim Ho-ryeong sprinted and made a spectacular diving catch, preventing what could have been a significant hit. He immediately transitioned from the catch to throw to first base, successfully completing a double play by throwing out the runner, Jung Joon-jae, who was attempting to advance. This incredible defensive play, dubbed a ‘super catch,’ not only ended the inning but also prevented a potential scoring threat, eliciting cheers and applause from his dugout and even surprising his pitcher.
Pitcher’s Praise for the ‘Super Catch’
James Nailed, the starting pitcher, expressed his admiration for Kim Ho-ryeong’s defensive gem. “Kim Ho-ryeong’s diving catch was one of the best defensive plays of my career,” Nailed stated. “It was great that it led to a subsequent play, allowing us to end the inning with three outs against a strong lineup.”
Kim Ho-ryeong Reflects on the Play
Kim Ho-ryeong, visibly humble about his contribution, reflected on the pivotal moment. “I felt a bit sorry for hitting the ball so hard,” he said, referring to Park Sung-han’s hit. “I just ran because I thought I had to catch it. When I was almost there, I thought, ‘Now I can catch it,’ and decided to dive. The fact that I could then throw it for an out to complete the double play was even better.”
The difficulty of such a play cannot be overstated. A missed diving catch can easily allow the batter to reach second or even third base. Such extraordinary defensive feats require split-second decisions and exceptional instincts.
When asked about his instincts, Kim Ho-ryeong attributed it to experience and practice. “I think it’s just instinct,” he explained. “When I’m playing defense, I get a sense of where the ball will be hit. I’ve practiced those kinds of plays so much that it feels ingrained in my body.” His consistent effort and ability to anticipate hits have become a valuable asset for the KIA Tigers’ defense.
Looking Ahead
The KIA Tigers’ strong performance, fueled by both their offense and exceptional defense exemplified by Kim Ho-ryeong, sets a positive tone as they continue their campaign in the second half of the KBO season. Their ability to score runs consistently and make crucial defensive stops suggests they are a team to watch.
