With his military service nearing its end, Gimcheon Sangmu midfielder Park Chul-woo is reflecting on his remaining time with the club and expressing a strong desire for positive results. Park, who enlisted in April 2023, is set to be discharged on October 6th, leaving him with just over 100 days of his conscription period. He shared his feelings after the recent match against Jeju United in the Hana One Q K League 1 2026.
Cherishing Final Moments in K League 1
Park Chul-woo acknowledged the limited time left in his military service, stating, “There are about 100 days left until my discharge. I want to finish my remaining military life and matches without any regrets and enjoy them fully.” He mentioned that he and his teammates have discussed this sentiment. “We talked about how, after being discharged, we might look back and feel that this time was too short or regret not making the most of it. So, we’ve encouraged each other to work even harder so that feeling doesn’t arise,” Park explained.
Park made his professional debut in 2022 with Chungnam Asan FC before transferring to Suwon FC in 2023. He has since appeared in 100 K League 1 matches, recording 3 goals and 4 assists. However, his tenure with Gimcheon Sangmu means he will be returning to K League 2 upon his discharge, as Suwon FC was relegated last season. Reflecting on reaching the 100-game milestone in the top flight, Park expressed gratitude: “It feels really good. I debuted in K League 2 and I know the romance and value of K League 1. I am truly thankful.”
He continued, “I am in a position where I have to go back down to K League 2 after my discharge. Honestly, the time I’m spending playing in K League 1 right now is incredibly precious and I’m grateful for it. I really want us, the players, to stick together and play hard until the day I’m discharged.”
Seeking a Home Victory
During the match against Jeju, Park Chul-woo managed to score a goal, marking his achievement in his 100th K League 1 appearance. Despite his individual success, the team could only secure a 1-1 draw. Now, Park is focused on securing a much-needed victory for Gimcheon, especially at home. The team is set to face Bucheon FC 1995 at the Gimcheon Stadium on the 11th.
Gimcheon Sangmu’s current season performance has been challenging, with only 2 wins, 9 draws, and 5 losses, accumulating 15 points. They have struggled to secure a win in their last five matches, with their last victory coming on May 2nd against FC Seoul (3-2). Park expressed his frustration with the team’s home record, stating, “We have no home wins. I try not to think of it as a curse, but this situation keeps happening. I wonder if I should just pray.”
He added with determination, “There are many home games this month, and honestly, I really want to get a win at home within this month.”
Commitment to the Club and Teammates
Park Chul-woo emphasized his current commitment to Gimcheon Sangmu, saying, “I am still a player for Gimcheon Sangmu, and I have to give my best here. I also want to repay the coach.” He also highlighted a sense of responsibility towards the players who will remain with the club after his discharge.
“I feel that we must not be a burden to the players who will remain after we are discharged,” Park stated firmly. “I want to do my best and leave on a good note before my discharge.” His words underscore a deep sense of camaraderie and a drive to leave a positive legacy during his final weeks with the team.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming match against Bucheon FC is crucial for Gimcheon Sangmu as they aim to break their winless streak, particularly on home turf. Park Chul-woo’s determination, coupled with his team’s desire for a victory, sets the stage for an intense encounter. His reflections on his military service and K League 1 career highlight the emotional weight of these final games for the player.
