Legal Counsel Strengthened for Former Defense Minister
The legal defense team for former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is currently facing multiple charges including those related to the controversial emergency alert system and alleged treason, has been expanded with the addition of three new lawyers. This strategic move aims to bolster his defense as the legal proceedings continue.
New Additions to Defense Team
Reports indicate that lawyers Lee Ha-sang, Go Young-il, and Kim Ji-mi submitted their appointment to Kim’s defense team on June 18th. The lawyers are reportedly focusing on the legal arguments and strategy to navigate the current legal challenges.
This development follows a previous incident in November of last year where one of the lawyers reportedly caused a disturbance during a trial. This lawyer had requested to be seated as a witness alongside former Minister Kim during the trial of former National Intelligence Service Director Han Deok-soo, a request that was denied by the court, leading to further discourse.
Background of the Case
Kim Yong-hyun is facing charges for allegedly relaying classified intelligence documents to Shin Bo-ryeon, who was a civilian at the time and formerly served as an intelligence director. The prosecution argues that as Defense Minister, Kim had a duty to protect classified information and national security.
The legal team’s expansion signals a determined effort to address the serious allegations against the former minister. The defense will now be handled by the existing legal counsel, Yoo Seung-soo, along with the newly appointed lawyers.
Previous Legal Proceedings
In a related development, the former minister had previously received a three-year prison sentence for allegedly transmitting military secrets to Shin Bo-ryeon. The court at the time emphasized Kim’s responsibility to safeguard national security by protecting classified information during his tenure as Defense Minister.
