YouTuber Convicted of Defamation Over Espionage Allegations
Prosecutors have requested an eight-month prison sentence for a YouTuber accused of spreading defamatory information, specifically alleging that an individual associated with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is a Chinese operative. The request was made during the first trial of a man identified as Park, in his 50s, who faces charges of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc. (defamation by disseminating false facts).
Allegations of Foreign Interference
The legal proceedings, overseen by Judge Kwon Min-jeong of the Criminal Division 6 at the Seoul Eastern District Court, center on accusations that Park, through his YouTube channel last year, suggested that Ms. Kim, a director at T&C Foundation, had a high probability of being a Chinese agent. These claims are considered false information that could damage reputation.
Authorities stated that Park’s statements were difficult to accept logically without substantiation, and uploading videos containing these remarks constituted a grave offense. During the court hearing, Park reportedly admitted to all the defamatory allegations brought against him.
