Paraguay’s World Cup Aspirations Suffer Major Blow
A celebratory atmosphere turned to despair during Paraguay’s send-off match for the upcoming World Cup, as a crucial player suffered a severe injury, potentially jeopardizing their tournament participation.
A Joyous Occasion Marred by Tragedy
Paraguay hosted Nicaragua in a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asunción. The 40,000-capacity stadium was filled with enthusiastic fans eager to celebrate the national team’s return to the World Cup stage after a 16-year absence. The match itself was a resounding success for Paraguay, who secured a dominant 4-0 victory over their opponents, accompanied by spectacular fireworks illuminating the night sky.
Early Setback for Key Attacker
However, the jubilant mood was short-lived. Mid-game, Julio Enciso, a pivotal player for the Paraguayan squad, collapsed on the field. The 22-year-old attacker, who plays his club football for Brighton in the English Premier League, appeared to be in significant distress. He was seen clutching the back of his right leg and was visibly emotional, shedding tears as he was helped off the pitch. Reports indicate that the injury occurred just 20 minutes into the first half.
Enciso’s Crucial Role for Paraguay
Enciso has been instrumental in Paraguay’s qualification campaign, contributing three goals and two assists in the South American qualifiers. Despite his young age, he has amassed 31 senior international appearances. His club career has seen him feature prominently for Brighton, making 57 appearances. He also spent time on loan at other clubs before making a strong impression in Ligue 1 with Strasbourg this season, where he recorded three goals and six assists in 27 matches. Across all competitions, Enciso has scored 12 goals in 42 games.
Coach’s Concerns and Potential Replacement
Head coach Gustavo Alfaro expressed his deep concern for Enciso’s well-being. “We hope the injury is not serious and is simply the result of a knock. We hope Enciso can remain with the team and return to full fitness,” Alfaro stated. He further detailed the injury, explaining that Enciso initially injured his hip, which then led to an issue lower down that affected his gluteal muscles. “Enciso was momentarily frightened and had to be substituted,” Alfaro added.
If Enciso is ultimately ruled out of the World Cup, Miguel Almirón, currently playing for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer after a stint with Newcastle United, is expected to fill the void in the squad.
Paraguay’s World Cup Group Stage
Paraguay has been drawn into Group D of the World Cup, alongside the United States, Turkey, and Australia. Their opening match is scheduled for the 13th of the month against the United States.
