Ryu Hyun-jin Continues Stellar Performance, Ties for League Lead in Wins
BUSAN – Ryu Hyun-jin, the veteran pitcher for the Hanwha Eagles, showcased his enduring talent on July 5th at Sajik Baseball Stadium, delivering a commanding performance against the Lotte Giants. He pitched six innings, allowing only two earned runs on three hits while striking out three batters. This victory propelled his season record to seven wins against two losses, placing him in a tie for the league lead in wins alongside pitchers from LG Twins and KT Wiz.
Despite the impressive statistics, Ryu expressed a nonchalant attitude towards his standing. “I’m really not paying attention to it,” he stated, referring to his league-leading numbers. “The batters are giving me a lot of support when I’m on the mound, so I feel comfortable playing.”
A Blend of Velocity and Control
Ryu’s arsenal on the mound included fastballs reaching up to 148 km/h, complemented by a diverse mix of off-speed pitches. He effectively utilized 19 changeups, 10 cutters, 8 curveballs, and 3 sliders to keep the opposing hitters off balance. The first inning proved to be his busiest, with three ground balls requiring quick defensive plays. He navigated the inning without allowing any runs.
While the second inning saw his first hit allowed to Kim Min-sung, Ryu managed to escape without any earned runs. A clean third inning was followed by a challenging fourth. After issuing a walk to leadoff hitter Go Seung-min, who was later retired on a foul ball, Ryu allowed a crucial double to Kim Min-sung, resulting in the game’s first earned run. He closed out the inning by inducing a ground ball from Son Ho-young.
Resilience on the Mound
Ryu retired the side in order in the fifth inning. However, in the sixth, with two outs, a fielding error and a subsequent defensive miscue allowed another run to score. Despite the setbacks, Ryu fended off further scoring by striking out Kim Min-sung, who had previously hit him for a run.
After Ryu exited the game, the Hanwha bullpen, including Park Sang-won, Lee Sang-gyu, and Park Jun-young, delivered a scoreless performance, securing the team’s decisive 9-2 victory. Hanwha’s offense provided ample support, scoring seven runs while Ryu was on the mound.
Managerial Praise and Player Perspective
Hanwha manager Kim Kyung-moon lauded Ryu’s performance, stating, “Pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin gave us an ace-like performance, which allowed us to create opportunities on offense.”
Reflecting on the challenging first inning, Ryu admitted, “It felt like the first time I’ve had this many balls hit to me in a single inning. It was tough.” He also commented on the earned run, noting, “It was a difficult hit. I wasn’t too bothered by it.”
Ryu also praised his infielders for their solid play. “Our fielders seem to be gaining strength these days,” he observed. “They seem to be fighting aggressively with the batters. Recently, there have been fewer errors, which I think gives us the strength to compete with our opponents.”
Consistent Top-Tier Performance
With his latest outing, Ryu lowered his earned run average to 2.97, ranking him third in the league behind KIA’s Sean-Ho Oh (2.39) and Samsung’s David Buchanan (2.61). His consistent presence among the league leaders in both wins and ERA underscores his status as a formidable force in the league, even as he downplays the significance of individual accolades.
