AI-Generated Image Leads to Arrest in Phishing Scam
A phishing organization’s cash delivery scheme was thwarted when a victim, tricked by an AI-generated image of a money stack, led authorities to a key operative. The accused, identified as a male national of Kazakhstan, was apprehended and subsequently received a suspended prison sentence.
Court Ruling and Sentencing
On May 5th, the Seoul Southern District Court, presided over by Judge Park Ji-won, sentenced the Kazakh national, referred to as ‘A,’ to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years. The charges included violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Financial Fraud and other offenses.
Modus Operandi of the Phishing Ring
The incident unfolded in April when victim ‘B’ fell prey to a phishing group operating through a messaging app. ‘B’ was persuaded to install a fraudulent securities trading application and deposit approximately 12 million won (approximately $9,000 USD). When ‘B’ attempted to withdraw profits, the phishing group demanded a commission fee, insisting on cash delivery.
Suspicious, ‘B’ sent the group an image of a money stack, allegedly created using artificial intelligence, to lure them into a trap. When ‘A,’ the operative, arrived at the designated meeting spot to collect the cash, he was apprehended by police who were lying in wait.
Defendant’s Plea and Court’s Reasoning
During the sentencing hearing, ‘A’s defense argued that he was misled by his superiors and acted under duress, attempting to support his parents. He acknowledged his wrongdoing and expressed deep remorse.
Prosecutors had initially sought a three-year prison sentence for ‘A.’ However, the court cited mitigating factors, including the defendant’s claim of being a victim of circumstance, his limited role in the overall scheme, and the fact that his actions did not result in the completion of the crime. The approximate two months ‘A’ had already spent in detention were also taken into consideration.
