Police Detain LG Partner Firm Employee Over Assault Allegations
Authorities have apprehended an employee of a partner firm for allegedly assaulting two individuals at the LG Science Park in Seoul. The suspect, identified as Mr. Jeong, a man in his 60s, is accused of using a knife in the incident, leading to serious injuries for the victims.
Suspect in Custody, Charged with Assault
The Gangseo Police Precinct in Seoul reported on June 5th that they have detained Mr. Jeong and requested an arrest warrant. He is currently facing charges of assault, with investigators examining the possibility of intent to cause death in relation to one of the victims.
The alleged assault occurred on the morning of May 27th on the second floor of the LG Science Park in Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu. Mr. Jeong, an employee of an LG partner company, reportedly used a knife to attack two LG employees, a team leader and a department-level staff member.
Both victims sustained injuries to their arms and ribs and were transported to the hospital. Fortunately, their lives are not in danger.
Investigation into Motive Underway
Police apprehended Mr. Jeong on May 27th under special circumstances, initially seeking an arrest warrant for suspicion of assault with intent to cause death. This was based on the assessment that there was intent to kill at least one of the victims.
However, investigators later determined that Mr. Jeong likely intended to assault both victims, leading to the current charges of assault.
During questioning, Mr. Jeong reportedly stated that the victims had previously treated him poorly, frequently speaking down to him and disregarding him. He claimed that he committed the act out of rage after receiving a ‘hate message’ that day.
LG Electronics has issued a statement clarifying their position, stating that they had proposed reassigning Mr. Jeong to a different project, not that he should be fired. The company maintains that their suggestion was not a demand for his dismissal.
