South Korea’s Presidential Office has warned that additional cargo ships, including some reported missing, face heightened risks following the hijacking of the HMM Namuho vessel. Officials revealed this assessment during a National Security Council meeting on the 13th.
Uncertainty Over Attack Methods
While some nations suspect Iran’s Shahed-136 drones targeted the Namuho, no firm evidence supports this claim yet. Authorities continue to evaluate crew deployment and captain details amid ongoing investigations.
Recent drone strikes on cargo vessels suggest leaked shipment information has exposed multiple ships to threats, according to security analysis.
National Security Director’s Statement
National Security Office Director Wi Seong-rak addressed the incident at a forum hosted by the Korean Newspaper and Broadcasting Executives Association in Seoul’s Press Center. He stated, “We cannot yet determine if the hijacking involved drones or other methods.”
Director Wi responded to UAE claims labeling the event as a “drone terror cargo” incident, noting, “reports the UAE indicate this classification, but they do not specify the nationality of the targeted cargo.”
He emphasized the need for on-site investigations, adding, “To understand the full picture, we must dispatch personnel. Even if not drones, missiles remain a possibility, and other cargo ships are vulnerable.”
