The People Power Party has launched its Central Election Strategy Committee under the leadership of spokesperson Jang Dong-hyuk ahead of the June 3 local by-elections. The move emphasizes highlighting the special counsel bill aimed at canceling the indictment against opposition leader Lee Jae-myung.
Announcement and Timeline
Senior spokesperson Park Sung-hoon confirmed the committee’s rollout during a meeting with reporters on May 11. He stated that the full lineup would be revealed before candidate registrations open on Thursday and Friday. “We plan to announce the Central Election Strategy Committee ahead of candidate registrations on Mok and Geum days,” Park said.
Focus on Broad Appeal
Park explained the selection process targets figures who can consolidate conservative support while appealing to moderate and independent voters. “We are recruiting individuals with the expandability to rally the conservative base and reach out to centrists and non-partisans,” he noted.
Jang Dong-hyuk is set to serve as the standing committee chair, maintaining continuity with past practices. Park added, “Previous party spokespersons have jointly handled this role, and we intend to stay within that framework. Delivering a unified national message remains crucial, without neglecting spokesperson duties.”
Key Personnel and Structure
The committee will prominently feature senior lawmakers and younger members. Prominent figures such as Na Kyung-won and Ahn Cheol-soo are expected to join as co-chairs. Final personnel decisions are slated for confirmation by Wednesday.
Strategic Emphasis on Special Counsel Bill
The party positions the indictment cancellation special counsel bill as a core campaign theme. A dedicated “Indictment Cancellation Response Task Force” will operate within the committee to underscore the bill’s flaws. This TF will include party lawmakers, external experts, and other participants to amplify the message nationwide.
