Comedian Gian 84 Gifts 100 Million Won to 100 Seniors
Comedian Gian 84, whose real name is Kim Hye-min, has donated a total of 100 million won ($72,000) directly to 100 elderly individuals who collect trash for a living. The gesture highlights his ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable community members.
In the latest episode of the YouTube channel ‘Self-in,’ Gian 84 appeared as the first guest on the ‘Donation Designer’ segment. Officials from the Seoul city government helped select the 100 primary recipients, ensuring aid reached those in genuine need.
Personal Motivation Behind the Generous Act
Gian 84 explained his drive: “Even a small amount from my pocket means money for grandma or grandpa. I want to protect them.” The donations aimed to provide immediate relief to seniors facing daily hardships.
The channel’s producer noted, “Following a request from Seoul city officials and public enthusiasm, we identified these dedicated trash collectors and gave each 1 million won.”
Past Philanthropy Efforts
This is not Gian 84’s first initiative. In 2022, during his first presidential run in Jinan, he donated 87 million won in full to various causes. He also launched the ‘100 Challenge,’ depositing 10 million won each into accounts for victims of the Bora apartment fire.
Beyond cash gifts, Gian 84 engaged personally with recipients, fostering meaningful connections.
Recipients Share Gratitude and Struggles
One senior expressed joy: “Hearing about 10 million won for my life excites me. I feel so rewarded. I want to live longer.” Gian 84 replied warmly, “Please eat well and stay healthy.”
Another shared realities: “Picking up trash for two months barely yields 70,000 to 80,000 won. Food prices keep rising, making it even harder.”
Gian 84 reflected on the impact: “Seeing people happier than with a month’s earnings fills me with gratitude. Donating brings accomplishment and joy. More should try it.”
