Seoul Prosecutors Summoned in Embezzlement Probe
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office has launched a high-profile investigation into allegations that senior prosecutors misappropriated confiscated funds during a high-value corruption case. Two prosecutors currently under scrutiny were summoned for questioning on Tuesday morning regarding suspected document destruction and embezzlement.
Details of the Investigation
Prosecutors Kim Jung-min and Nam Kyung-min face allegations they destroyed evidence and personally benefited from approximately 50 million won ($38,000 USD) in cash seized during their 2024 investigation into a prominent legal bribery scheme. The funds were confiscated during raids related to a judicial corruption case involving former Supreme Court justice candidates.
Case Background
Financial records indicate the prosecutors failed to properly document the disposal of luxury brand shopping bags and designer stickers seized alongside the cash. While an Original Asset Preservation Certificate (Wonhyungbojon) was issued for the seized items, investigators discovered discrepancies in how these high-value assets were processed.
Prosecution’s Defense
Officials from the prosecutors’ office maintain that proper procedures were followed when separating the cash from other seized items. They point to forensic accounting reports showing the physical separation of banknotes from accompanying materials during evidence processing.
Expanding Probe
The investigation has now expanded to examine multiple financial transactions connected to the evidence handling. Sources close to the matter indicate investigators are scrutinizing bank records and transaction histories to trace the movement of funds following the seizure.
Ongoing Investigations
This marks the third round of summons in the widening probe. Last month saw the questioning of former Seoul Central District prosecutors, while earlier this month investigators examined individuals connected to the judicial bribery scheme at the heart of the original case.
