The 26H2 update, following this pattern, will be a feature experience pack, making it a less disruptive update compared to a full version overhaul. While the scope of changes might not be as broad as a major version upgrade, it will bring notable enhancements. Early indications suggest features like movable taskbar icons, improved search functionality within Windows, integration of Copilot, and interface adjustments to the Start menu. A Note on Windows 11 26H1
A distinct version, Windows 11 26H1, was released earlier this year to support specific new hardware, including devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 series processors. This version is based on a different Windows core than the 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 releases. While Microsoft has stated plans to provide a pathway for these devices to update to future Windows versions, specific integration timelines have not yet been disclosed. The Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 26H1 are supported until March 2028.
Microsoft’s Evolving Update Strategy: ‘Update Preview’
A key aspect of Microsoft’s current update strategy for Windows involves the proactive introduction of new features through monthly updates. Windows updates are typically released on the second Tuesday of each month, alongside optional ‘Update Previews’ released towards the end of the month. macOS 27 ‘Golden Gate’: The End of an Era for Intel Macs
Apple’s macOS also follows a yearly release cycle, with the new version, macOS 27 ‘Golden Gate,’ slated for general availability on September 16th. With the arrival of ‘Golden Gate,’ support for macOS 14 ‘Sonoma’ will conclude. Consequently, Intel-based Macs will no longer be able to officially run the latest macOS version.
