US Forces Launch Retaliatory Strikes Against Iran
United States military forces conducted retaliatory strikes against Iran on June 26th, responding to an earlier attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Central Command announced the offensive actions via the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “In response to Iran’s attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, we have carried out strong retaliatory measures.”
This escalation follows a period of heightened tensions and a fragile ceasefire agreement between the two nations. The U.S. and Iran had previously reached a ceasefire agreement on June 14th and subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on June 17th, stipulating the immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities on all fronts.
Iran’s Provocation and U.S. Response
The situation deteriorated on June 25th when Iran launched a drone attack against the Singapore-flagged container ship ‘Ever Reach’ as it transited the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump immediately signaled a strong response, declaring the act a “clear violation of the ceasefire.” U.S. military leadership echoed this sentiment, characterizing Iran’s action as an “unjustified attack on a commercial vessel and a clear breach of the ceasefire.”
The following day, U.S. military aircraft targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar installations. This military engagement marked a significant development, occurring just nine days after the ceasefire MOU was enacted.
Ceasefire Talks Under Strain
Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran had been ongoing, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions against the country. However, the recent military exchanges, including an Israeli strike on Hezbollah within Lebanon, have cast a shadow over these discussions, creating renewed uncertainty.
The U.S. strikes are being interpreted as a message from President Trump, signaling a desire to normalize passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This action underscores the delicate balance of power in the region and the potential for further conflict.
Iranian Claims of Counter-Strikes
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran stated through state broadcasting that the U.S. administration had violated the agreement, as has been the pattern. The IRGC further claimed that its naval forces had targeted multiple U.S. military bases in the region in retaliation.
