US Markets Observe Juneteenth Holiday Closure
Major financial markets in the United States, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, ceased trading on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth. The U.S. bond market also closed for the federal holiday.
Markets are scheduled to resume regular trading on June 22nd, following the weekend.
Understanding Juneteenth
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The holiday was officially established as a federal holiday in 2021 by President Joe Biden. Since its designation, key U.S. financial markets, such as the NYSE and Nasdaq, have observed an annual closure on this date.
Previous Trading Day Performance
In the preceding trading session on June 18th, U.S. stock markets concluded with gains. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.1% to close at 7500.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index saw a more significant increase, climbing 1.9% to settle at 26517.93. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also experienced a modest uptick, adding 0.1% to reach 51564.70.
