Kim Do-hyun Faces Extended Layoff After Elbow Surgery
Professional baseball player Kim Do-hyun of the KIA Tigers will undergo surgery on his right elbow, team officials announced. The procedure, scheduled for June 30th in Tokyo, Japan, will address a minor ligament tear and also include a reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). This marks a significant setback for the pitcher’s rehabilitation efforts.
Setback in Rehabilitation
Kim Do-hyun had been working towards a return this season after suffering a stress fracture in his right elbow last September. He had been progressing through a step-by-step pitching program, but recently experienced discomfort in the injured area. Following a thorough examination at a medical facility, he and the team decided that surgery was the most viable option.
The decision to proceed with surgery was made after discussions between the medical team, the player, and the club. Manager Lee Beom-ho expressed his disappointment, stating, “Unfortunately, this is the outcome for Kim Do-hyun. He was preparing for rehabilitation, but it seems it didn’t go as planned.” He further explained that the medical advice was to address the ligament issue and the UCL reconstruction simultaneously, as both would eventually require intervention.
Extended Recovery Period Expected
The surgery will likely sideline Kim Do-hyun for at least a year. Manager Lee estimates a potential return around this time next year, provided the rehabilitation and UCL reconstruction proceed smoothly. “We have to look at it as a year from now for the MCL,” Lee said. “After rehabilitation and the ITP program, he might be back around this time next year.” The manager expressed hope for a full recovery, noting the team’s commitment to supporting him through the process.
A KIA Tigers representative assured that the team will provide all necessary support for Kim Do-hyun’s treatment and rehabilitation to ensure a healthy return to the mound.
