The KIA Tigers secured a crucial 12-2 victory against the SSG Landers on June 18th at the SSG Landers Field in Incheon, marking a successful start to the second half of the season. Pitcher James Neil delivered a dominant performance, pitching a complete game shutout to earn his sixth win of the season and propel the Tigers to their second consecutive win.
Neil Dominates on the Mound
James Neil was the undisputed star of the game, showcasing exceptional control and skill throughout his outing. He pitched seven innings, allowing only four hits, including one home run, while striking out five batters and issuing two walks. His performance was instrumental in limiting the SSG offense and preserving the Tigers’ significant lead. This outing marked Neil’s sixth win against five losses for the season.
Reflecting on the game, Neil expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “I’m happy we could start the second half with a win,” he stated. “More importantly, I was able to pitch seven innings and save our bullpen pitchers. If we had needed multiple relief pitchers today, many of our two-way players would have had to pitch, so I’m satisfied that I could ease that burden.”
Tigers’ Offense Explodes for Early Lead
The KIA Tigers’ offense provided ample support for Neil’s stellar pitching, erupting for a decisive five runs in the third inning. The scoring began with a walk to Jung Hyun-chang and Kim Ho-ryeong, followed by a two-run double by Casto. Kim Sun-bin and Na Sung-bum then contributed consecutive two-run doubles, and Park Sang-joon added another RBI single to cap off the explosive inning.
The offensive onslaught continued in the sixth inning when Kim Ho-ryeong reached base and scored two more runs, extending the Tigers’ lead. The decisive blow came in the eighth inning, with Han Joon-soo hitting a two-run double and Park Jung-woo clearing the bases with a three-run triple, solidifying the 12-2 victory.
Kim Ho-ryeong’s Super Catch Ignites Momentum
While the offense and pitching were strong, Kim Ho-ryeong’s contributions were particularly noteworthy. In addition to his offensive efforts, which included multiple hits, a stolen base, and scoring runs, Kim made a spectacular defensive play in the fifth inning. He sprinted deep into the outfield to make a diving catch on a fly ball, then quickly threw to first base to complete a double play. This incredible defensive gem shifted the momentum entirely in favor of the KIA Tigers.
Neil lauded Kim’s defensive effort, calling it “the best defensive highlight of a player’s career, across all sports.” He added, “It led to subsequent plays, and with runners on base, it allowed us to end the inning with only three batters faced.”
Neil’s Resilience and Control
Despite allowing two runs in the third inning on a solo home run by Jo Hyung-woo and a double by Park Sung-han, Neil remained composed and did not falter. He systematically retired the SSG batters for the remainder of the game, ensuring his first-half appearance ended on a high note.
Neil demonstrated excellent crisis management skills throughout the game. In the seventh inning, he allowed the leadoff batter to reach base via an error but calmly handled the subsequent batters, preventing any further scoring. Even after Kim Ho-ryeong’s spectacular catch and subsequent double play in the fifth inning provided some relief, Neil continued his steady pitching without showing signs of wavering.
Team Effort Secures Victory
With the offense providing significant run support, Neil pitched with ace-like stability, anchoring the KIA Tigers’ winning effort. The team collectively amassed 18 hits, a testament to their offensive prowess on this particular day.
Neil emphasized the team’s collective effort in securing the win. “I want to give credit to the batters who hit 18 hits today,” he said. “All the players did their part, and I’m grateful they created a winning pitching situation for me.” The victory not only extends the Tigers’ winning streak but also demonstrates their potential as they head into the latter half of the KBO season.
