Israel Reaffirms Commitment to Lebanon Security Zone, Undeterred by Iran’s Demands
Despite Iran’s recent assertion that a cessation of hostilities in all border regions, including Lebanon, is a core condition for future agreements with the United States, Israel has reiterated its firm stance on maintaining its operations in southern Lebanon. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared on the 21st, local time, that the Israeli military’s actions to neutralize security threats emanating from Lebanon face no limitations, neither in the past nor in the present.
Strategic Defense Zone to Remain Intact
Minister Gallant explained that recent troop deployments have solidified Israel’s defense line within a designated security zone, safeguarding communities in the northern part of the country. He emphatically stated, “The Israeli military will absolutely not withdraw from the security zone in Lebanon.”
Iran Links Ceasefire to U.S. Deal Compliance
Earlier, Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed through the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Iran will closely and diligently monitor the United States’ adherence to its commitments. Baghaei characterized a recent meeting in Switzerland on the 18th as an assessment of the implementation status of a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
He elaborated that the commencement of negotiations for a final agreement is contingent upon the fulfillment of specific articles within the MOU, particularly Articles 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11. Baghaei stressed that without the cessation of hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, as stipulated in Article 1, the process cannot advance to the stage of final agreement negotiations.
