Choi Ji-man Joins Ulsan Waves, Targeting Future League Debut
Ulsan Waves’ Choi Ji-man has officially commenced his technical training, signaling a significant step towards his return to professional baseball. The team’s debut for the veteran slugger in the Korean league appears to be taking shape, with a clear path emerging following his personal rehabilitation.
Choi Ji-man was seen training alongside his new teammates at the Ulsan Munsu Stadium on the 15th, having completed his recovery period. He is now eligible to participate in the upcoming Futures League series against Lotte, scheduled to begin on the 27th in Ulsan. This three-game set presents a potential debut opportunity for the former Major Leaguer.
“I haven’t been with the team long enough to fully grasp the atmosphere,” Choi Ji-man commented. “I hope to build comfortable relationships with my junior teammates, becoming closer naturally, like brothers.”
A New Chapter in Korean Baseball
Choi Ji-man joined Ulsan in April, signing a contract for the league minimum of 30 million won. The Ulsan team sought to reinforce its roster, and Choi Ji-man aimed to showcase his skills in preparation for the 2027 KBO draft. He had been managing a lingering knee issue, which he addressed through personal rehabilitation.
This marks Choi Ji-man’s first foray into Korean baseball. He previously debuted in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016. His career in the States also included stints with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays, where he enjoyed a successful run. Over eight MLB seasons, he played in 525 games, hitting 67 home runs with an .764 OPS (On-base Plus Slugging percentage).
After playing for a Triple-A team in 2024, Choi Ji-man made the decision to return to Korea.
Adjusting to New Challenges
Reflecting on his initial training sessions, Choi Ji-man shared his observations. “It’s been a while since I’ve trained with a different team. The baseballs in Korea are a bit thicker than in the US. The sound of the bat and the overall feel are different. However, the hitting sensation has been better than I expected.” He added, “With many club officials and scouts in attendance, I wanted to show them my best performance.”
Strategic Return Plan
Ulsan manager Jang Won-jin outlined the team’s approach to Choi Ji-man’s integration. “Since he is returning after completing knee rehabilitation, a full-time role immediately is not feasible,” Jang stated. “Initially, he will serve as a designated hitter. The plan is to gradually increase his playing time, eventually transitioning him to a position player at first base.”
The exact timing of his debut will be carefully determined. Choi Ji-man expressed his thoughts on the matter: “I will discuss it with the manager. It’s more important to fully regain my physical condition than to rush. However, if my condition is good, it could happen sooner than expected.”
Manager Jang echoed this sentiment, emphasizing a cautious approach. “The player’s physical condition is the top priority. We plan to gradually ease him back into play.”
Confidence for the Future
Choi Ji-man also conveyed his confidence despite the pressure of the upcoming September draft. “There is pressure with the draft approaching in September. I need to perform well in a short period, but I am confident. While I can’t predict the exact outcome, I wouldn’t be on the field without this self-assurance. If I can maintain my health, I believe I can show good results.”
