Former England and Premier League star Raheem Sterling is reportedly facing potential jail time after being charged with offenses related to the inhalation of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. The incident occurred in May on a road in Hampstead, London, when Sterling was driving a Lamborghini and lost control of the vehicle, leading to an accident. Subsequent police investigations revealed that Sterling had been inhaling the substance via balloons at the time of the crash.
Sterling’s Legal Troubles Emerge
According to reports from The Athletic on August 15th (local time), Sterling has partially admitted to charges of dangerous driving and possession of a controlled substance, specifically the anesthetic nitrous oxide. During the police investigation, Sterling reportedly confessed to inhaling the substance. Officers responding to the scene discovered two canisters of nitrous oxide on the player’s lap while he was seated in the passenger seat of his vehicle. A further search of the car uncovered four more canisters and a used balloon.
The Dangers of Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, often referred to as ‘laughing gas’ or ‘hippy crack,’ is a substance that can induce euphoria and a sense of detachment. However, excessive inhalation can lead to serious health consequences, including dizziness, heart palpitations, and severe neurological damage. Recognizing these risks, the UK government officially classified nitrous oxide as an illegal substance in 2023, imposing strict prohibitions on its possession and use.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing Arguments
Sterling appeared before a district court and admitted to the charges. He is currently subject to an interim driving ban. His legal defense team is reportedly arguing for a suspended sentence, emphasizing his early admission of guilt. Conversely, the prosecution is seeking a custodial sentence, citing that his actions meet seven out of ten aggravating factors for dangerous driving.
