LG Twins slugger Moon Bo-kyung is facing a critical juncture in his season, seeking to break out of a significant hitting slump. The team, currently on a three-game losing streak after consecutive losses on June 16th and 17th, is set to face the KT Wiz again on June 18th at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul. In an effort to find his rhythm, Moon conducted a special batting practice session alone at Jamsil Stadium on the afternoon of June 17th.
Moon Bo-kyung’s Solo Practice Session
The intensive session began around 2 PM, with only members of the strategic analysis team present to track advanced metrics like batted ball data, in addition to the usual batting practice pitchers. Moon focused on his hitting for approximately 20 minutes. During the practice, he reportedly launched several home runs over the right-field fence and hit numerous balls that fell just short of the fence, landing on the warning track.
Season Performance and Injury Setback
Moon Bo-kyung’s season statistics reflect a challenging year. He is currently batting.257 with 7 home runs, 39 RBIs, and an OPS (On-base Plus Slugging) of.759. A left ankle injury sustained in early May sidelined him for a period, and although he returned in early June, his hitting performance has noticeably declined since his comeback. In June, his batting average dipped to.291 over 110 at-bats, barely staying above the.200 mark, with an OPS of.623.
The second half of the season has shown some signs of life, with Moon recording 3 hits in 9 at-bats over two games. He managed 2 hits in 4 at-bats during the June 17th game against KT. However, a persistent issue has been his performance with runners in scoring position, where his numbers have been particularly concerning.
Struggles with Runners in Scoring Position
A closer look at Moon’s performance reveals a stark contrast when runners are on base, especially in scoring positions. With runners in scoring position, his batting average stands at a mere.176 in July. This mirrors his overall struggles in crucial situations. In the June 16th game against KT, he struck out with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning, ending a promising opportunity. Later in the same game, with the score tied 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and runners on first and second, he failed to deliver a clutch hit, grounding out.
The June 17th game presented further instances of missed opportunities. Moon managed to get hits as the leadoff batter in the second and fifth innings. However, in the sixth inning, with one out and runners on first and second, he hit a fly ball for an out. In the eighth inning, with no outs and runners on first and third, his teammates Park Hae-min and Austin hit into outs (a foul fly out and a fly out, respectively), putting pressure back on Moon. Coming to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second, Moon struck out, ending the inning.
Managerial Expectations and Future Outlook
Manager Yeom Kyeong-yeop has expressed his expectations for Moon, noting his consistent production in previous seasons. “Moon Bo-kyung has delivered over 100 RBIs every year, hasn’t he? I expect him to show better results in the second half than in the first,” Yeom stated at the start of the second half of the season. Moon has been a pivotal part of the LG lineup, serving as the cleanup hitter and recording 101 RBIs in 2024 and 108 RBIs in 2025.
As the LG Twins navigate the remainder of the season, Moon Bo-kyung faces the challenge of overcoming his current slump and demonstrating his capability to perform under pressure, particularly with runners in scoring position. His solo practice session signifies a determined effort to regain his form and contribute significantly to the team’s success in the crucial latter half of the season.
