Busan Metropolitan City has announced that tolls on the Gwangan Road will be completely waived during peak commuter hours, effective August 8th. This significant change means that drivers will no longer be charged the previously discounted toll during the morning and evening rush periods.
End of Commuter Tolls on Gwangan Road
Previously, vehicles traveling on Gwangan Road during weekday peak hours (6-9 AM and 6-8 PM) received a 50% discount on the standard toll. This discount is now being replaced by a full exemption. The regular toll for small vehicles was 1,000 won, and this will no longer be collected during the specified times.
The exemption applies to all vehicles using Gwangan Road within these designated hours. No prior registration or special procedures are required for drivers to benefit from this new policy.
History of Gwangan Road Tolls
The implementation of toll discounts on Gwangan Road began in August 2009 with an initial 20% reduction during peak commute times. This discount was expanded to 50% in January 2018. In May of the previous year, the city extended the morning toll exemption period by one hour, starting at 6 AM instead of 7 AM.
About Gwangan Road
Gwangan Road is a vital 7.42-kilometer-long elevated bridge that connects Namcheon-dong in Suyeong District, near Gwangalli Beach, to Centum City in Haeundae District. It is a major artery for residents and visitors, facilitating traffic flow between key areas of the city.
The decision to eliminate tolls during peak hours is expected to ease the financial burden on daily commuters and potentially alleviate traffic congestion by encouraging more people to use the route during these times. City officials hope this measure will contribute to smoother daily commutes for the residents of Busan.
